When is it safe to look at baby hamsters?
Our hamster babies are a week old . When will it be safe to look in the nest and check how many there are etc? I don't want to upset mummy Peach and I'm still worrying she might kill a baby.

I don't know much about breeding but from what i've read here I think it's generally best to wait until they begin to come out of the nest rather than disturbing them, if I'm wrong I'm sure someone with more experience will correct me!

Re: When is it safe to look at baby hamsters?
It's usually when the babies start to open their eyes which can happen from as early as 10 days after the birth but generally breeders will work on a timescale of about 2 weeks to be on the safe side. Some mothers may still be anxious at this stage about intervention so I would see how she reacts to your presence before attempting to disturb the nest.

Patience xxx Seems it is best until they come out of the nest - no need to disturb anything - just keep putting plenty of food out

I agree with Fluffagrams - wait until eyes are open.
Often pups will leave the nest when their eyes are still shut, then the eyes open like little slits and then they open fully, Keep waiting until they have their eyes fully open. Dwarf hamsters often open their eyes a few days earlier than Syrians who tend to be much closer to the 2 week mark.

Re: When is it safe to look at baby hamsters?
its not that long to wait i suppose. Peach is enjoying cuddles and i can hear the babies squeaking occasionally so i guess all is well. Thanks for your advice.

Re: When is it safe to look at baby hamsters?
The squeaks sound quite reptilian . The babies were active today with 3 coming out while I was at work. I wonder if I should put out some special weaning food for them like porridge.
