Question Pet store quality breeding?

I am thinking about breeding hamsters. As far as i know there are no breeders remotely close to me( i live in midwestern USA). I would just like to know if people would know if this could possibly be okay.... I wont breed pet stores if i can find another option!

It can take quite a long time to research the correct ways of breeding, proper care, having money ready for vet bills (which is highly likely with pet shop hamsters, it is an expensive hobby, don't expect any profit), having all equipment ready and your mind ready for the good (and the bad that happens with breeding). You will also need to research genetics to be able to identify and correctly pair hamsters together, some pairings can cause issues (like eyeless white pups with the Wh gene). Please read This Thread and maybe reassess if you feel you are ready for breeding just yet. I am aware there are breeders in the US. I know Strong Brew Hamstery has knowledge on breeders in the US so maybe give them a message. It's also highly important, even after all your research, to have a mentor. They can help direct you and help you asses progress and help with any issues that arise. A mentor must be someone who experienced with breeding. They must be a reputable and responsible breeder so you can breed the correct way.

Thanks so much for responding! I have been doing a lot of reading and I realise that this is not going to be a quick thing! I will try and do my best at all of these things👍

Hello,

Though there aren't many, there are some reputable breeders in the US - I remember speaking with someone from Illinois?

It's false economy to not travel for quality stock. Even if it means travelling outside the midwest and perhaps took a weekend roadtrip. Consider that it will otherwise take you years, many litters, and much expense simply to reach the starting point that you can otherwise obtain quite quickly from a breeder. Not only does this practically make sense, but you'll know which colours to expect, and that the lines are less likely to feature inheritable disease. With store bought animals, you're rolling the dice in both these regards. With store bought animals, you can't know the history and it's a dice roll. Not to say it can't work, but why not benefit from the work of other breeders rather than start from scratch?
