Mustachio Robos @ SBH
One of the amazing things about being the "pioneer" breeder in Ontario, is being able to see other hamsteries begin, flourish and expand. I've had the lucky opportunity to mentor many of these newer breeders - I love sharing the knowledge I've gained, learning from them, and most of all - sharing the amazing hamsters I have with them!
In the fall, a lovely lady who I will refer to as Kay, sent in an application to adopt a hamster for her adult daughter who was in university. I accepted her application, and all was well. In December, she emailed me asking for help - she was going to adopt a hamster from the Humane Society, and needed some tips on building a bin. She didn't have the tools or knowledge to make one at this time.
I'm all for rescues, and so I said "hey, why not swing by, and my partner Andrew and I can make you one!".
Thus was the start of a beautiful friendship. Kay then went on to rescue a hamster named Holly, from a house where she "didn't get along with their dog", "liberated" a hamster from a US pet shop named Lilo, and eventually would go on to adopt Lentil from my L17 litter.
However, her love was for roborovskis, specifically my boy Fishsticks. We became fast friends and I encouraged her to explore more.
That was how Mustachio Hamstery began.
Now, eight months later, several trips to the USA, and an import from California, the robos are beginning to start their robo army in Canada!
In North America, we only had Moxie Hamstery in California who was ethically breeding robos. We have been hard strapped to find good candidates for our breeding project, so as such have many unknowns. Kay was very lucky to be able to adopt the last two pups from Moxie's lines (she's retiring now) and one of her older males. A plane trip later, and they're now honorary citizens!
Kay has most of the robos, but I've been happy to host some here. I ended up falling in love with one of the girls, named Tilapia, or Tilly, and when my first pair wasn't working out, Kay brought Mackerel (Mack) over. Mack was from Moxie's Lines, and had such scrumptious type. He carried pied and husky.
Unfortunately, a few weeks ago Mack passed away suddenly in his nest. It was heartbreaking finding him, especially as he was not my hamster but Kay's. She's mourning his passing, however there is a glimmer of light - before he passed, he did manage to successfully breed with Tilly.
Tilly had a fairly large litter on Saturday, and has been quite the doting mom since. Tilly carries husky too, and has quite nice size and very stark white agouti markings. She really likes me (and is not so fond of Kay) so she will likely stay here at SBH.
I can't wait to see these little ones once they're mobile, and will happily update the forum with photos of cute robos! I haven't had a robo litter (and I may never have another, we'll see) so I'm really excited to see them mature. They're already very different from my Syrian litters - loud, opinionated, and TINY! Tilly has moved her nest a few times... unfortunately I was too loud with the supplements. But, she seems to have settled now, so fingers crossed.
TLDR; Robo babies! Hahaha.

I love hearing all about the Mustachio Hams on insta so I'm pleased to see you share them here too
I was sad to hear about Mack going to the rainbow bridge but it is good news about the litter and I can't wait to see the pups once they are old enough for photoshoots. Hope it all continues to go well for Tilly and the pups

It was truly heartbreaking. I had just found Toby, and gone through my own grieving with him, wrapped him up, and put him in the freezer until burial. I went in to check on the robos, found Tilly running around like a moron, and couldn't find Mack. Andrew joked that he had passed too, and when I did find him curled up in the nest, my heart sank.
He wasn't very old at all, and it was late, and I couldn't reach Kay to let her know. Finding someone else's hamster has passed while in your care is the worst feeling ever.
I can only hope that Tilly has some little lovelies that are just as wonderful as their dad in her nest.

Lovely to hear how Mustachio hamstery began & the beginnings of the Canadian Robo army!
So sorry to hear about Mack, that really must have been so hard for you, I really hope that Tilly's litter do well & he'll live on through them, look forward to hearing more about them.

What a beautiful thread hearing about your friendship with Kay and how Mustachio Hamstery came about.
Such a shame about Mack but wonderful that he'll live on through the pups. Congratulations to Tilly and becoming a mum.

Re: Mustachio Robos @ SBH
Thanks all. Kay has been a great friend to us. It's been really nice to have other breeders in the area. There is a good group of us with the OHC, and we have been able to help a few other breeders "jump start". There is a lovely breeder duo near us breeding from my line and we're both mutually benefiting from it so well!
Tilly and her little ones are doing very well. Robos are quite noisy in the nest, and mum is very sensitive so I have been doing minimal disturbances. I have to be quiiiiite careful when I switch out her supplements!
She's moved her nest a few times but seems to have everything under wraps now. I'm excited for them to finally get big enough to wander around, but still some waiting to do now.

Re: Mustachio Robos @ SBH
Pups are doing very well though I can barely see them most days. We have the bin on a glass table, so if she burrows down I can see from underneath, but otherwise I can't see a thing.
Tilly is holding her condition very well, and is out a bit more now to get supplements and veggies.
They're 9 days old today so hopefully we see some escapees over the next few days, if mumma Tilly can't get them back fast enough!

Ooh! Little baby robos! I can't wait until their eyes are open and we can see pictures of the sweet things
Of course my opinion is a bit biased because I've only owned robos, but they're my favorite species. They are just so... so... TINY!!!
Tilly is lovely. I like that little white spot between her eyes

You should see the pups! Now that they're fuzzy, we see their heads poke out to grab some supplements. Not quite mobile yet, but getting there. They're *so small*! They probably weigh next to nothing, rofl.
Some look like they'll have eyes open soon. They're 11 days old, so hopefully within the next few days.
