Re: Welcome P17, CocoPups!
Just catching up on this wonderful thread, Hekomi! I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of Molly's pups, but at least she is doing fine and recuperating nicely.
I'm sorry to hear about Peanut, too. Congrats on the CocoPups doing so well, and I hope that they continue to thrive! They are all so precious and adorable; it's no surprise since they have such gorgeous parents. I look forward to all of the updates and seeing these little ones grow.
Congrats, again!

Re: Welcome P17, CocoPups!
Thanks everyone, you're all very sweet. The pups are getting much bigger and we're learning their temperaments and seeing their type a bit better now. Phenotypes are still a little in the air until they're bigger, but I chose keepers last night and named everyone. I don't have all the photos up yet, these are my non-keepers.
When I select for keepers, I base my choices around these factors, in order:
- Temperament when handled. Do they react well to handling? I've never had a pup bite me, but you can absolutely tell when pups are more or less skittish. The two keepers I selected, one for myself and one for Hathor Hamstery, are both very laid back and easy going. They're still jumpy as most pups are, but the best choices.
- Type, specifically head shape. This young it's hard to assess the overall body, but I look for a broad head shape, with wide set ears. In North America, we have particularly bad type, so I've been working as hard as I can to bring in some nice type hamsters. Luckily Cordelia and Cashew both have lovely type.
- Size, though that can be trickier to assess. However, I won't knock a slightly smaller hamster with a nice temperament and type. I've actually done some size reduction on my lines because they got a bit too big.
- Colour & sex, though usually this doesn't matter in my litters, it does with this specific one. I wanted for sure extreme dilutes to perpetuate the lines. I also wanted to eliminate cinnamon best I could from my gene pool. Both keepers have a chance of being cinnamon carriers however.
Once all my photos are up, I'll share the rest of the pups.

Aww, cuteness overload! They are all so precious and adorable. I love their names, too! I look forward to seeing the rest of the pups whenever you have chance. Thanks for sharing how you determine which pups your are keeping and why. It is interesting to see how you prioritize the different criteria.

I'm in love with each and every single one of them. It would be impossible for me to choose my favorites just by pics alone. I think they are all so special and ooooooooh, SO cute!!!

Re: Welcome P17, CocoPups!
Sorry, the weekend got away from me. We had a bin building and craft day with the Ontario Hamster Club (OHC), and that was busy. Then I went to visit my sister hamstery, Hathor Hamstery, and pick out the pup I'll be adopting from her. Sunday involved two adoptions and a food mix collection! The hamsters eat a homemade, mostly organic mix with 30+ whole ingredients, so it takes a while to put together. It's still not done (I freeze some ingredients, we need black beans, and I need to make and dehydrate egg biscuits) but hopefully soon. The adult hams are planning a revolution at the lack of mix.
AKA Moose, who is going to Hathor Hamstery as a breeder ham. His temperament is lovely.
My keeper! Her name is Potoooooooo - Pot + 8 OS ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potoooooooo) but we are referring to her as Seven of Ten, or just Seven, as we refer to all the hams as potatoes. Hopefully she won't assimilate us into her collective #Borg.
The pups are now 3wks old and are crazy, adorable little toots. They're *so* sweet, many gaining Cordy's amazing temperament. I have a few selected, but want to touch base with a couple other breeders as to whether or not they want a pup.
I'm also looking towards my next breeding pair who I hopefully am pairing tonight!

Re: Welcome P17, CocoPups!
Resistance is futile, you will be assimilated. Your individuality will be added to our collective cuteness. We are the Cocopups! Comply!
