Default I think my new hamster is pregnant

Hello! I got my hamster a few days ago and I think she might be pregnant. She's got the two rounded lumps on her sides like I see in videos/pictures, but since she's my first hamster I'm not sure if it could just be that she's chubby. Are there any other signs I should be looking for that would indicate if she is or not?
Thanks!

It's so common for females to be pregnant when you get them from the pet shop. PAH actually confessed to me that 95% of the time their females are pregnant that's why my local one only tends to stovk males with the occasional female.

I'm sure someone here can advise you brilliantly, lots of people here are very educated on hams.
But I don't think the limps you described sound like a pregnant hamster but I'm no expert, and my past female who was pregnant when we got her, it was so long ago I can't remember what her belly looked like.

It's not that common but occasionally hamsters are pregnant when sold.
I'm not a syrian expert but I think the gestation is about 16 days so you will probably see signs of her getting bigger & more obvious baby bumps fairly soon.
I think it would be best to treat her as if she is pregnant for the time being, provide her with plenty of substrate & plain white shredded toilet tissue as she may start to build a big nest ready for the pups if she is pregnant.
If she does it's best not to disturb her too much & as it gets close to the time she would be having pups don't disturb her at all, just put food (lots of it!) & water in the cage & leave her in peace while you wait to see if pups emerge.

If you have a photo of her it might help see if she is pregnant or it's something else going on with her.

I'm just wondering if this is why she is trying to chew out of her cage! If you think she might pregnant and you're still thinking of moving her to another cage, then better do it quite quick so she settles in before having the babies and also it needs so be one suitable for a pregnancy (the Kerry tank you mentioned is good). You never know she might be ok with the Barney later and if she does have babies you'll need two extra cages for when the babies are sexed so one for girls, one for boys (although I think the girls can stay in with the Mum for a bit so maybe one extra cage is ok - Souffle will know!).

Meanwhile keep trying to block off that corner and you can probably repair it as and when. Just out of interest, how much substrate do you have in the cage? If you fill the base then the corner isn't so noticeable.

Serendipity I think maybe you're confusing CallingAllHamhams with someone else, Princess Pixie maybe?!

Could you get some photos? These may help us a bit. Sometimes though, hams show almost no signs of pregnancy so it's just a shot in the dark really. Besides that, look for behavioral changes. Creating a nest, becoming more antsy, etc. Make sure you offer a bit of extra protein. Not too much, but a bit of egg or tofu will help Good luck, and make sure to read up on caring for pups!

Ooh! I'm so sorry - yes I was confusing you with Princess Pixie! My apologies Calling all Ham Hams.

She does need to be on a "pregnancy watch" though (as I've seen Souffle call it). So try not to disturb her too much (difficult when you've just got a new hamster!). Generally it's recommended not to do a clean out for the first two weeks anyway, to let them settle in or it can stress them. Just add lots of torn up strips of torn up white toilet paper as nesting material, in a big pile so she can make a nice big cosy nest and put food and water out, and wait and see Sometimes they don't show as really looking pregnant until very near the time the pups are about to be born, and then they look very wide in the hip area. If she already looks rounded they could be due quite soon, so even more reason not to disturb her or clean anything out. Don't worry about smells. They are quite good at chucking smelly substrate out of a nest and I'm sure she will make a clean nest and pee in one corner of the cage if she's preparing to give birth. Both my Syrians have tended to cover up the pee area with substrate if it starts smelling a bit (they are quite clean little things really). Poops don't really matter - they aren't dirty or smelly - they're like little black hard seeds. Sometimes they eat them for extra vitamins (which is normal) or hoard them in case of a food shortage!

As the others say, as well as her hamster mix, plus a piece of fresh veg each day and some extra protein.

I'm sure one of the breeders will come along to advise what extra food to put out, but put plenty of hamster mix out as Cypher says, and a piece of veg each day. I'm not the best to advise on which extra protein foods.

The reason for not disturbing her is so she doesn't cull the pups. If they feel threatened while pregnant or after giving birth they can kill or eat the babies. So it's also important not to disturb her or anything in the cage for a while after babies are born. Don't be tempted to peak or handle them or her.

If she does give birth you might start hearing squeaks. You won't see any pups at first, but she will probably take lots of food and bedding to the nest and eventually you will see them emerge when they're big enough to leave the nest - again I'll leave it to one of the breeders to say how long that is - a week or so maybe?

So apart from putting food and water out, and not disturbing her it's best not to go too close to the cage - just look from a distance! So also, don't try taking photos of her or the babies until they are a bit older and have their eyes open. If she does have babies.

It does sound like she might be pregnant and about to give birth though.

Thank you everyone for all the advice! She has been peeing in one corner of her cage since I got her. I've been making sure her food bowl has plenty of food and she always has fresh water. What are some good veggies to offer her? I've given her bits of blueberry, apple, and celery so far.
Should I take anything out of her cage? She's got a hide, running disk, a chewing stick toy, a sleep sack, and toilet paper tubes. I want to make sure I do everything right!

Breeders often take out the wheel/running disc. Not sure when it is best to remove it though. If your hamster is spending most of the time in the nest, only coming out for food, water and to pee, rather than exploring etc it could also be a sign of her having babies in the nest.

Just in case you didn't know the rules about posting pup photos. They are not allowed unless the pups have there eyes open.

If she is pregnant it's probably unlikely she would be using the flying saucer but to be on the safe side you could take it out, I don't know what kind of cage you have but check everything to be sure there's nowhere babies could fall, get trapped or be unable to reach water or other essentials if they should arrive.

Make sure she has some protein extras, things like chicken, a little cooked egg, maybe some nuts as well as giving her the veg & any other healthy extras.

This is my veg list, hope that helps a bit, I haven't included fruits as I don't give them to my dwarf hams.

Asparagus
Basil
Broccoli
Brussels sprouts
Common or red clover
Cabbage, green or red
Carrot
Cauliflower
Celery
Chard
Coriander
Courgette
Cress (not mustard & cress as commonly sold together)
Cucumber
Dandelion leaves & flowers
Endive/chicory
Green beans/runner beans
Kale
Pak choi/Bok choi
Parsley
Peas/mange tout/sugar snap/snow
Peppers, any colour
Potato/sweet potato cooked only
Radicchio
Spinach
Squash/pumpkin
Swede
Sweet corn/baby corn
Turnip
