Default !help can they mate and breed

Hey So two days ago i bought a pair of russian hamsters in purpose to mate and breed. They are obviously male and female and my question is that the female is 3 - 4 weeks old and the male is one year old. when i had them in one cage they fighted in the first hour but then they got along and they even slept in the same spot. can they mate since i had them together in the cage for 2 days or the female is small.

Your female is far too young to be thinking of breeding her. Though she may be capable at this age it is like letting your young teenage daughter get pregnant and that is not good for the immature body. Best wait till she is 3 or 4 months at least till introducing them. She will need to be on pregnancy watch now you put them togather.

Hello. The others have answered the age issue. I just wanted to point out that breeding is something to be considered very carefully along with the reasons for breeding. It helps to know the genetic background of the hamsters or they can pass on genetic illnesses, or a mismatch in breeding can lead to some genetic abnormalities in babies that are born. I am not an expert in breeding myself but am aware it is a matter that needs a lot of consideration.

You would also need to be registered with a good exotic vet in case the Mother had difficulty giving birth or developed an infection or they can really suffer - sometimes a baby can get stuck as well. Plus Mothers can cull their babies if they are disturbed too soon.

With Russian dwarf hamster particularly I think, care needs to be taken when choosing breeding mates as most russian dwarf hamsters are already hybrids of campbells and winter whites so you'd be breeding hybrid with hybrid probably which I don't think is recommended. It is very hard to find pure winter white or pure campbells (even though pet shops may say they are) unless you get them from a breeder and they have a pedigree. Hybrid dwarf hamsters already have a genetic predisposition to diabetes and other conditions (neurological ones sometimes).

So I would strongly suggest that if you want to go into breeding hamsters, do a lot of reading and research first, ask experienced people (there are a number of breeders on here) and choose your hamsters for breeding carefully. And apologies if you already know all that

Separate them now.
As souffle said she may already be sexually mature but that isn't the same as being old enough to breed without possibly having a negative impact on her health & risking the chance of losing her & her pups if she did get pregnant.

I really can't urge you strongly enough to keep all your hamsters separate & do some real research into breeding before attempting it again, I really don't want to be rude but from both your posts it's clear you don't have the knowledge or experience for this yet & it could all end very badly for your hams.

None of us want to be rude We are just concerned. Enthusiasm is wonderful and don't mean to squash it, but we are just trying to pass on experienced advice xxx There are also lots of threads on here for research!

Think Before You Breed!

It would be great to hear how your two new hammies get on, housed separately and hear how they settle in, plus follow up on the female if she might already be pregnant.
