Default Maternity unit preparation advice

Hello

So we are expecting our first litter of syrians shortly.

Any advice in regards to setting up our little ladies maternity unit would be greatly appreciated.

Regards
Lea

We would keep it all pretty simple. Clean out at 12 days pregnant, remove the wheel and any tubes / small houses etc that pups could get stuck in / under / behind/
You need to give a huge amount of substrate and lots of ripped tissue bedding. Most females make a volcano nest! We do offer a shoebox type nesting box with air holes and the bottom cut out it however it often just upsets the female and they won't use it so we take it out if she is kicking it around or tuning it over. Pregnant females often do their utmost to escape so make sure cage is very secure. If she seems a bit dizzy over the clean out then cover a side of the cage with a large cardboard box cut to sit over it. Provide lots of food including small seeds for her store area and make sure your bottle is low enough for the pups when they start to come out to drink.

Thanks Souffle

When you say ripped tissue bedding how small should it be torn?

I tear it a couple of times and my girls then shred it to how they like it. Some use it almost whole, others shred it into the finest pieces! If the girl has already given birth, or is very close to giving birth, then I put any extra nesting material away from the nest area and she will drag in what she feels she needs. That way I'm not stressing her by interfering with her nest area.

I tear a sheet of toilet paper lengthwise into about 5 or 6 strips And do that four or five times and put the heap of strips in the cage to be pouched and taken to the nest. Lots of good breeder advice above. When she's had them it's really important to not disturb her, go near her or the pups for a certain length of time (Souffle or Vectis will know how long) or she could cull them, if disturbed. Just put food and water out discreetly.
