Considering breeding
Hi guys
So I've been hoping to breed for a while now, and have done a lot of research, but my major problem is where to get quality parents from. Having adopted two hamsters in the past, I know that shelters do not allow breeding from their hamsters, so I'd consider a pet shop. My biggest problem with that is that I don't know the genetic history of the hamsters. Is it enough to judge on fur patterns (I know that crossing some types could be disastrous) or is it essential to know more than that?
Thanks for your help 😊

Re: Considering breeding
I'm not a breeder so I can't offer much advice but I would think that perhaps the best place to get quality parents would be from other breeders, that way you would know their line and colour so that you would not end up breeding hamsters that shouldn't be bred.
Hopefully someone who does breed will be able to give you some better advice

Re: Considering breeding
If you're in the UK the best thing would be to go to some hamster shows, get to meet some breeders there, discuss it with them & get on someone's waiting list for your hams, sometimes breeder hams are available to buy at shows too.

Re: Considering breeding
Do you happen to know of any breeders/shows in the west of Scotland?

Re: Considering breeding
There is a couple of breeders listed on the Northern Hamster Club, one in Glasgow and one in the borders but I don't know if they are still breeding. There isn't any shows either I'm afraid (there is a pet hamster show in Turriff). You might want to have a look at the North of England for breeders.
