Default White genetics question

I have a good understanding of genetics in most species, but I haven't paid a lot of attention to the white genes & their relations in Syrian hamsters before. I just shied very, very far away.

Well, I purchased a black-eye, mottled-ear 'white' SH Syrian that was a 'him' housed with a lot of other males still, only to get 'him' home and find out it's definitely a female. No question!

I have no idea if she's mated, but it's likely, and also likely to a banded.

In trying to prepare myself for a potential litter from her, I got more into the white in Syrians, and I'm finding a lot of conflicting information.

How do I get the *best* guess at what genetic makeup she truly is? She appears solid true white. I can't find a hint of any other color in her, except her ears are mottled, not solid pink nor solid grey. I've tried the light test on her eyes, and they absolutely are black.

Mottled ears will indicate a pattern. Can you post a photograph of her?

I hope she is not pregnant, as white hamsters and white patterns (like banding) hide white belly/roan which produces anopthalmic (eyeless) white hamsters when homozygous.

I just bought a female in a cage with three males myself last week. She is bumpy around her lower half. I'm expecting a litter soon but would be pleasantly surprised if she's not

I don't know much about Syrian genetics but it sounds like she could be a black eared white that's also mottled or roan (if that's possible?).

She could be any color gene if a true Banded DEW. However Having Black Eyes I would bet she is actually a Banded Dominant Spot Black Eyed Cream. The cream spots seldom are noticed until the Hamster is a mature Adult.

This was Blake who was sired by a Black Dominant Spot and out of a Cream Band and was given to me when his owner could no longer afford to tend him and all his siblings.

As you can see he is pure white with Black eyes and Mottled ears. Once he matured you could see his Cream spots but only in the winter season. In Spring and summer he returned to and all white coat.

However the risk of Anopthalmic White pups is still very high being you have no gene history on her or the males in with her. Hopefully she is not bred and you can enjoy her as a great pet.

I dont have a good picture of her yet..I'm trying to let her settle in well. She looks exactly like Blake in the thread, but a little more mottling on her ears. I will have to be prepared for a bad litter but hope for the best
