The reason it isn't the best choice to house hamsters together is due to the fact that they're very solitary little creatures naturally and in the wild would only form same sex pairs for the purposes of breeding. Therefore, most pairs become territorial and aggressive over one thing or another and will eventually fall out. Some are lucky enough to catch this as of right before it happens, but a majority of owners (most who don't understand hamster care or behavior) do not catch it until it's too late and they come home to find one dead and another severely wounded hamster. Thus, it's not the best choice to risk your hamster's safety and mental well-being to keep two together. The reason the shelf isn't good is because pairs can become territorial over the different sections (the same as with modular cages) and territorial issues inevitably lead to fights and leads me back to the point I made before. All in all it's your choice, but make sure you research, research, and research before diving into this! You must also make sure to have back up cages or a divider so they can be separated if it comes to that. I wish you the best
hey! thanks for answering and I think you don't understand the thing about the shelf but all the other stuff helped me thanks!

Thanks!

I think you're right.
but the cage is really big, would that be cruel? The 2 parts would still be quite large I think? Here is a picture f the detolf (for the people who don't know what it is)
It's a picture from google NOT MINE

You could have a split Detolf with a robo per side, but there's no reason to start with two robos being housed together The Detolf would only be suitable for dwarf hamsters though(great length for Syrians, but the width is just not good enough)and even then the split Detolf would be limited to robos and Chinese.

The Detolf sounds huge at first, but there are bigger and better DIY cages if you get creative! However,it is fine for the majority of dwarf hamsters if used appropriately(single hamster to a full cage, one per side split with robo or Chinese).

Half a Detolf each would be fine for most dwarf hamsters, but I think it's a tad small for a Syrian. The whole Detolf would make an amazing cage for any species of hamster if it did not have a divider though. Otherwise, you would need to look at other options like a bin cage or a commercial cage, like those on Zooplus.

Yes! That's what I meant. Sorry I wasn't clear.

The Detolf's a great cage. It could be ok for a small Syrian, but it could be a problem later on being a bit packed for space for its toys.

My male Russian hybrids Stephano and Francisco used to be housed together. They shared a Duna Fun Large and got along very well. Unfortunately, not long ago, Stephano needed mite medication and the strong medicine smell upset Francisco and they got into a fight and needed to be separated (Stephy was also irritable from the mites so that didn't help either).

I was lucky that they were not territorial over toys and platforms but a lot of pairs need two of everything otherwise they will become territorial and fight. It's also good to have two of everything so that if they need separating they have everything they need. The most important things to have two of is water bottles, wheels, chews (place a few whimzees around the detolf), and sand baths. I also recommend putting the water bottles at either end of the detolf since it's such a long cage, and instead of using food bowls, scatter the food across the cage. It's fun for them and it's the best way to make sure they're both eating the right amount.

My Russians' favourite toys are their bendy bridges, sand baths, cardboard boxes, and tunnels. They also need around 5 inches of substrate to burrow in. Russians LOVE to burrow!

Before you buy them, make sure you have a spare cage to separate them if needed since keeping them together if they start to fight is dangerous even if it's only for a few days (in just one fight, Franny lost most of his left ear so if I kept them together, it could've been much worse). And please keep in mind that more often than not, Russians will need to be separated.

It's 4am so I'm sorry if I didn't make sense or I said something incorrect by mistake.
