Unwanted Litter?
So my male Syrian has once again got to my female- I'm not being careless when I say I have tried everything to stop him getting to her since her last accidental litter...but here I am.
I don't know 100% if shes pregnant, they were only together for a second or two I looked over and they were fighting--excuse me to say but she was rather...'wet' down there and I'm not sure if that was her getting ready or if I was too late and shes now going to have a litter.
I really don't know what to do- i struggled to look after and deal with her LAST lot of pups and I can't afford to keep these ones due to time and the fact that where I live its difficult to find them homes-
I really don't know what I can do in this situation, is there a chance she's pregnant? or have I caught it in time? I know she wasn't in heat before tonight due to her rather...horrendous smell she gets when she is in heat so am I safe?

Re: Unwanted Litter?
It's pretty much a 50/50 shot, it can only take just a few seconds for her to become pregnant so that's definitely a possibility. Keep an eye on her, you should know not too long from now. How exactly is he getting in, I don't mean this in a rude or condescending way, but I'm a bit concerned that if he can get to her, she can escape. Have you tried putting her enclosure up high and his lower? Sometimes I find separating males and females into separate rooms helps a bit. Though they will still smell one another, they cannot communicate or get to each other quite as easily. Hoping for you that she isn't pregnant, Id recommend maybe getting her a new, very secure cage so this doesn't become an issue and she doesn't escape and hurt herself. Best wishes

I'd even go as far as padlocks on any doors if possible, since some storebought cages unfortunately have doors which can be opened by hamsters if they figure out how.

Re: Unwanted Litter?
The fact they were fighting could be a good sign. If not receptive to mating/in heat they often fight.
Separate rooms are a good idea. But secure cages for both hamsters are even better.

He's getting in because she sadly doesnt have a lid for her fishtank- I have tried to find lids but because of the awkward size I can either get one that doesnt stretch the whole way across or is too wide- I'm planning to start duct taping his lid firmly down including blocking all the holes at the back- hopefully that will do something

Re: Unwanted Litter?
If you want an easy fix, you can go to a nearby craft store and buy large sheets of plastic mesh. Then you can cut the mesh to size and add a handle on top so it can be lifted off. If you don't have a craft store nearby, hardware stores sell galvanized steel/wire mesh and this can be used just the same as the crafting mesh. It's definitely wort a shot if you want to prevent more litters
Here's a link to steel mesh

Re: Unwanted Litter?
It does sound like he will find a way out without a lid! All they have to do is build a mountain of substrate in one corner and climb it! Some people make lids - there are a few tutorials on youtube that look fairly simple. As for keeping it down - I've heard of people putting books on top of the edges (but they might fall off with a tank).
Anyway - you won't know if she's pregnant really - I would think there's a good chance as he was pretty motivated to get at her by the sound of it. It'll just be a case of observing over the next couple of weeks.
Although you're dreading the idea - just get prepared for the fact she may be pregnant and get organised - I find it helps cope if you get organised! Once you know if she is pregnant, start advertising the pups and meanwhile prepare for needing extra bin cages.
