Default Need help

Almost 4 weeks ago I purchased a Male Syrian Hamster for my daughter. As soon as I brought it home I placed him in a clean cage with food and water and immediately left him alone as I was told they needed a few days to become comfortable in a new home before handling. The next morning i was surprised to find that my Male hamster had birthed 8 babies. It is now coming up on the fourth week and the 8 babies are healthy and running around. i am finding homes folr the hamsters but here comes my problem. Mom has become extremely skittish and angry. I left the cage alone except for food for two weeks and then only started lightly petting babies this last week. But she has only gotten worse. will she calm down if i separate her or what?

She is most likely just being very territorial and protective of her babies. They will need separating very soon into girls and boys. Have you sexed them? If you post pictures on the forum, we can help.

Were all the babies eyes open when you started taming? What cage is she in? Have you found good homes that understand hamsters' needs?

She will need to be separated from her son(s) first but will be able to stay with her daughters for a little longer, if she wants. Make sure they aren't fighting at all, if daughters stay with Mum. Separating her could make her better or worse. I would wait until they are completely weaned which is around 4 weeks. If you read through some of the other pregnancy threads on here, you may find out a little more. I can't tell you much more as I am not a breeder, but there are many experienced breeders on here who can give you more advice.

I wouldn't rehome hamsters until they are at least 5-6 weeks old. My hamster was 6 and a half weeks when I got him.
