Default Lilio! Litter - born 24th September

At 13 days old the Lilio!s had their eyes open so I can share a picture of them with you. Mum is Liessa Dragonlady who was born here as were Lia's mum (Herenna) and grandmother (Perdita). Dad is Lio!rt Wyrmbidder from Lilliput Hams. Both parents are normals so I was expecting only normals in the litter - which is what they gave me! Three girls and two boys at first glance.

It was only a quick snap as I knew they were going to have an adventure on the first day they'd ever been handled and wanted to keep this handling short. It was immediately obvious that one of the pups had something seriously wrong with his foot - it was very swollen and there looked to be a narrowed area above the swelling. He was running around on it ok, but it couldn't be that comfy.

Mum and pups went in their cage to the vet at lunchtime. Even in that short space of time the foot was losing its pinkness underneath so the vet felt that the risks of hoping nature takes its course and waiting for the foot to autoamputate were too great, so he's booked in for surgery tomorrow. Thankfully it's a back leg so, presuming he comes through the surgery and post-op recovery, he should adapt quite well without it (front leg loss can cause problems with pouching and de-pouching).

Beautiful pups Vectis. So sorry about the little guy's foot. All the very best for tomorrow's op. That means he has had to leave Mum and siblings very young. How do you handle things afterwards?

The vet and I have arranged that he arrives there as late as possible in the morning and can be collected as soon as is safe after his op to minimise time away. I'll see if mum will take him back. I popped to the shop to get my usual post-op hamster supplies of white carefresh and also picked up a 'surrogate mum' in case it's needed (it's a soft dog toy so if it's not needed by the pup my dog will have it!) I always have supplies of baby porridge and animal milk replacement powder at home in case of pup problems so will hand rear him. It's much better for him if he can be reared by his mum though.

Any thoughts on what may have happened to him? Glad he will be ok and healthy after surgery. The litter is so adorable.
