Default Hamster Miscarriage? Is that possible?

Hi there, I'm new here and so I want to ask all my hammy questions before getting into the chatter

Anyway! Here is the story: My boyfriend and I bought two russian albino dwarf hamsters from a pet store that we trust. A few months passed by and I caught my hamsters fighting badly and what I thought was Beans trying to dominate Pudding (but was in fact mating) so I separated them and low and behold, a few days later I saw the wiggly pink things in the nest! They were meant to be two female hamsters!!

Beans now has a new home and the babies are 5 weeks old (one went to his new home yesterday <3).

When the babies were two weeks old, Pudding started to display symptoms of pregnancy again and she got fatter and had a bulging belly. She started being rough and cruel to the babies so we separated them (it was time for that anyway). A few days before she was due, I saw blood all around the cage. It wasn't a huge amount but it was enough to alarm me. I cleaned Pudding up and assured she was okay and she seemed no different really, she actually seemed more cheerful.
In the next week, she lost the fat and stopped her pregnancy symptoms and since we had no new babies, we wondered if the blood was a miscarriage? I don't know if that is possible in hamsters but I thought I'd ask here. I was positive that they had mated, especially because my boyfriend picked Beans off of Pudding and saw stuff.. :/ I am also pretty sure the babies had already been born and that was why Pudding attacked!

Any ideas on what could have happened or was the mating just unsuccessful? (Thank goodness, she is quite a young hammie!)

I think any signs of blood and you should take her to a vet. I don't know if it's possible for hammies to have a miscarriage or not, but she could have ruptured something internally or have an infection, so best get her vet checked.

It's been a month now since the problem and there have been no issues, apart from her possibly being diabetic but I will find a small animal vet in my area to hopefully get her in for a check if the vet feels the need for it. Thank you!

It is absolutely possible for a Hamster to abort her litter and in fact is common if the female can't handle a back to back litter. Unless you waited to remove the male until after her first litter was born then I can't see how she got rebred unless it was a male pup who did the deed. When a hamster aborts a litter it can be very hard on the female and lots of blood can mean she had a stuck pup(another major problem with Hybrid dwarf hamsters). From all the stress of the hard delivery she may have culled any live pups and that too accounted for the blood seen about the cage.

It usually takes the mom a few days to clean herself up and unless she is off her feed or still has a blood discharge I would say a Vet trip would be stressful and unneeded. Do test her for Diabetes though as one of the first signs of Pyometra is excess drinking and frequent urination which of course is also a sign of diabetes.

We had no idea that they were not both female and we heard squeaking the night before they were separated so we believe the reason Pudding was fighting Beans was because of the babies and that is when we separated them so that is why I think she may have been pregnant after the first litter!

Oh thank you for your help! That sounds highly likely actually, especially since the first litter were sooo young at the time too! I will definitely test for Diabetes and if that is not the case, I may have a chat with a vet to see if Pyometra could be a possibility.

I really appreciate the help!
