Default Why did you start breeding?

I'm curious to know how breeders got started in the hobby? Although I am nowhere near experienced enough to even consider breeding, I find the genetics fascinating and would love to learn more about it. Is there any recommended reading? I do love reading these breeding threads, please keep them coming!

It all started with a beautiful teddy hamster named amon who i got as a gift.. i knew nothing about genetics back then.. so i decided to mate him with a female that i bought for him off a breeder..
Their offspring was healthy and cute and i started to get interested in reading up about hams.

Im still in baby shoes of breeding.. but i sat my goal to be beautiful fluffy teddyhamsters. Thinking about adding a satin line ♡

Well my beginning was rather pet store based as my parents had a good friend who had a small pet shop, and their friend asked if I would like to be their breeder of Hamsters. They bought everything for me the cage unit held 10 like 15 gallon long tanks and they supplied every need including the hamsters to be bred. My job was to mate the females to the 2 males I was given. Then Hand tame the pups and bring them to the store. It was only by God's grace that I never had any eyeless whites or double Satins back then because they gave me two males one was solid Sable the other was a Satin Sable Banded Roan. Roan sold quickly so I was instructed to breed Roan to Roan so I would get lots of roan pups(that was the store owners idea) Of the 8 females only two were solid sable the rest were Sable roans. and since the satin coat was well liked by buyers most of the 8 Females were Satin. 40 years later I now have lots of genetic knowledge and am still learning more as I work with a fairly new mutation pattern called Polywhite, and working with the Rust color gene.

I breed because I want a pet owner to learn that not all Hamsters are sickly and die within 4 weeks time. I really enjoy seeing and hearing about a new hamster owner and how much fun owning a hamster is.

I'm still very new to being a breeder, I have only had one litter so far and that was last year in october/november time. They were born on the 04/11/15. I became a breeder because I wanted to help create healthier animals than those in pet shops. It's dramatic how much of a difference there is to hamsters from pet shops to those in shows. It's a hobby of mine, and before I was introduced to the hamster community I had no hobbies at all, now I have quite a few. I've also made a couple of amazing friends through breeding hamsters, and it's so great being able to talk hamster-lady like to them, because no one else seems to understand haha. I also want to educate people on how to care for hamsters properly, and the more people that know the more the word spreads and hopefully one day pet shops will be filled with larger cages and more appropriate things for hamsters.
