Aggression on other forums towards new breeders
Im so gla to have found such a friendly place. I'm pretty new to breeding cute fluff balls and have noticed on other forums that new breeders are being bullied big time. People jump onto conclusions and are extremely judgmental. It can be very intimidating and I imagine that a lot of people who are new to breeding end up makes ng big mistakes because they were afraid to ask questions on forums and hence went ahead with breeding without knowing the basics.
This place is so different and friendly. It is a great place for asking questions and learning. I'm so glad to have found this place!

Re: Aggression on other forums towards new breeders
It is a nice friendly forum - that's one of the things I like - a bit of courtesy Ir is also fun too. We have a few laughs at times. I don't know much about breeding but there are plenty of people on here who do and can either give advice or share tips. I believe there is a lot to think about, particularly re genetics and so on, if thinking about breeding, but I'm sure you know that!

Re: Aggression on other forums towards new breeders
There is a great article here about breeding, and I like the approach. There are some hobby breeders who work to improve existing lines, and genetics, or help if you bought a hammy from a pet shop pregnant. Lots of good advice in the breeder forum. Very educational too.

Re: Aggression on other forums towards new breeders
I think here we have a deeper understanding of the reasons people breed and why it is a good thing to have more ethical breeders out there. On other forums, even talking about breeding may be against the rules, which honestly is a bit extreme in my opinion.
You have people who actually care about the animals and breed them for good reasons and do so ethically and with the best of care, and you have those who don't care about the animal and only want money.Once you understand the difference between ethical and unethical you get a whole different perspective, but sadly with PETA and other organizations spreading ridiculous nonsense about all breeders being evil it's hard to get the right information.

EXACTLY!
I think hamster breeding (at least in the US) needs to be completely re-vamped... Each pet store should be sourcing their hamsters from hobby breeders who care about the animals. There are so, so many deaths to the poor hamsters who come from big breeders, not to mention their personality issues form not being handled, or the lack of breeding for standards!
However, one day when I was buying a hamster from a big chain store, they found out I have other hams and do breed them, and the woman said, "I'm sorry, but we do not condone the breeding of animals." They would not let me buy the hamster! I was thinking they certainly DO condone it, if they sell animals, because those animals have to come from somewhere. And, as careful as they may be, they are getting their poor hamsters from the wrong source to begin with!
Craziness.
What we actually need are MORE people like me who care about each animal, not more profit for big breeders.
A zoologist came here yesterday to pick up her new baby hamster. She drove 2 hours one way to get him, and exclaimed that it was SO NICE to see hamsters in their natural, home environment. She had worked in a pet store for 2 years at one point in her life, and she said this is far, far better. Better enough that a 4 hour trip for a new hamster was nothing to her.
Good luck with your breeding. Please do not be afraid questions! And welcome!

I honestly feel like the US animal breeding as a whole needs to be revamped. The approaches and views on dog breeding, cat breeding, and even small animal breeding are very rarely positive and helpful, but in reality it's only hurting the pet community to behave in a derogatory manner and be rude to those who genuinely adore animals and are breeding in an ethical manner!
It's very sad to see the poor care in general that small pets get and how people view them as being less important than dogs and cats sometimes, which is just wrong I think there's also a huge misconception with dogs and cats from shelters somehow always being way more healthy than those from breeders which in general is just absolute garbage.

Re: Aggression on other forums towards new breeders
If not for me raising show dogs I would most likely not be raising Hamsters Sadly often times a new breeder is over looked or fed to the wolves cause on the WWW it is Impossible to know at times if a poster is a responsible adult who simply doesn't know any thing about genetics, or a young child who thinks it would be great to breed and "Get Rich" Haha on selling Hamsters. The worst scenario is a legitimate person who is and adult but just happens to join a forum right behind a child who has been antagonizing a Forum for the old: If I cross my purple hamster with my orange hamster what color will I get in their pups. Or a young person who really has potential to become a very good and responsible breeder who by demands of I am looking for a Polka Dot Hamster and I MUST have one NOW post every other day the forum is at the breaking point. Of course at this precise moment you join and even though you are not anything like this past poster they groan thinking here we go again so sadly the forum seems bitter and rude to you.
Of course the #1 reason for this forum to try to always be kind and not aggressive is simple, The Owner and the Moderators have a Zero tolerance for rude and judging members so we all have been trained to have respect for all members. I also think this forum has a more family oriented atmosphere as well.
That said I think a big thumbs up and appreciation statement needs to be given for each and every member especially Fluffy and their Mod Squad for maintaining this atmosphere in this Forum.
On a different note Teddy and Nelly what species of Hamster are you focused on in your Hamstery?

I've noticed that this is probably the only well established hamster forum that actually abides by that rule 100 percent. It really is like a massive family of loving friendly people who are always so understanding and helpful
There is definitely a level of maturity required to breeding animals,as well as accepting that you probably won't make much profit if any.I noticed this a lot when I wanted to get into breeding pythons a while back, but really there are principles to breeding any animal and the breeders here do follow them.
I'm very interested as well to know what species,as well as learn more about German views on hamsters and different random things about German hamster supplies and such!

I'm working on improoving my long haired lines and my goal is to breed the "perfect" long hair teddy hamster with a thick and evenly long soft coat and a sweet friendly personality. I'm also thinking about introducing a satin line to my small hamstery.
I also want to provide an alternative to pet shop hams who often are mass bred without much human contact in small cages.
Generally there aren't many official hamster breeders here in germany. A lot of them have the "bully" attitude towards new breeders even though i don't want to unfairly generalize.
This may also be due to the sad fact that there are unethical "breeders" around who don't know much about genetics and keep their animals in small cramped cages selling their fluffs only for profit.
I'm pretty new to breeding hams so I can't say too much about breeders in germany yet and still building up contacts.
