Default ST's Hamstery D-16 Litter

I always try to breed two females close together to have a foster should something occur with one litter or the other. I also try to breed one maiden female and one experienced female. Nainsie is the Experienced Mom and this will be her last litter. Named a odd spelling of my name it means Grace in Hebrew. Nainsie is full sister to Beruriah and is a Black Hetero Polywhite Banded Dominant Spot. She was bred to My Yellow boy Lavi who carries for Rust, black, and is Hetero Polywhite.

I bred these two to gain Banded, and Dominant Spot patterns and Cream free Torts. Both parents have very sweet temperaments and should improve each others minor faults. Again I will not get any Rust or Chocolate colors and with this litter further test matings with a rust or Chocolate male will be needed to determine if the keeper(s) carry Rust. However this litter and my C-16 litter pups will be excellent mates as neither Rust line is related to the other However the Yellow line is full brothers. Again the goal is to have Homo Polywhite Dominant Spot pups as one of my 2016 minor goals is to produce a Satin Chocolate Homo Polywhite Dominant Spot. Also a cream free Yellow/ Tort line.

The mating took place March 16th and the litter is due April Fools day the 1st of April. Possible colors are Golden, and Black Males, and Golden Torts, and Black Torts, and all can be Solid, Banded, Dominant Spot, Banded-Dominant Spot with the possibility of Hetero and Homo Polywhite added to the patterns.

Here's the two during mating. Lavi was cleaning the production parts and Nansie was trying to get him back to the business at hand

This was Nainsie tonight not near the bulge of Ahave but she still has 4 days to expand. Her and her full sister tend to not show huge bumps until 1 to 2 days before due.

Prayers again for a safe healthy delivery. Is there a book or something where I can read about hamster genetics and coloring? Perhaps then I could better understand the colors and abbreviations. I find it fascinating.

I too like to breed 2 litters together. Of course, this winter, when only 1 or none were being born, I didn't accomplish my goal, but we seem to be back to 2 actual litters being born at the same time, finally.

I've not had to foster a pup yet, but I like the idea of it being an option if needed!

The best book on Colors and some basic Genetic codes is found in the Book Hamsterlopedia and is a book no hamster owner and Hobby Breeder should be without. You can usually locate a good condition used one on Amazon.com(no affiliation to except for my youngest Nephew probably being the one to pack it in the box)
Online you can learn much from the Cached website of River Road Hamstery at
https://web.archive.org/web/20120622...htm#goldengeno

Some of the side links no longer show photos but the basic chart of all the gene codes are there, and they have and amazing and detailed account for two genes (One not yet officially confirmed in the UK) which is Extreme Dilute, and the Confirmed one which is Recessive Dapple.

Just a heads up fostering pups is seldom successful. It takes a very calm and trusting female who is not concerned about a sudden change in the nest. The litters have to be very close in age(no more then 48 hours difference in age). And the foster mom has to have a rather small size litter for all fosters to survive to weaning. Fostering and older litter to a younger one tends to cause the younger pups to not thrive as the older pups will push the newborns from the nipples. Fostering a newborn litter into an older litter tends to cause the younger pups to not thrive as well, as the older pups again take away the nipple from the younger ones. That said a Mom who can produce a huge amount of milk will be able to suckle both litters successfully and only the weak will fail to survive in both litters.

I have found a pup birthed from a good Foster mom will also tend to have the same desired ability to foster pups as her Mom, and a line of excellentFoster Moms can be bred.

How fascinating that a pup birthed from a good Foster mum will also be a good foster mum herself. Incredible and sweet.

I have the hamsterlopedia book. In fact one of my syrians (Gopal) came from Toweyvale hamstery who helped to write the book. His father was a pet shop hamster.

I had one line of which my heart Hamster Dovey was from. Her Mom Specks would happily accept any pups and raise them. One time Dovey's 1/2 sister Spicks had 16 pups while her Dam had only 5(Which included Dovey) and I decided to move 5 of Spicks pups to Specks. The fosters and natural birthed pups thrived until the Mom came up very sick and lost all her milk. Specks pups as well as the fosters were starving so I risked it and took all 10 pups and placed them all in with Specks who was still nursing 11. Not only did Spicks accept her own pups back but took in all her 1/2 siblings and sucked all 21 pups very happily. Several months later Dovey returned the favor when Spicks birthed 7 pups and died birthing the last 3 pups. Dovey happily raised her 1/2 sisters pups and her own litter too. Since that line though I have had very little success with fostering.

This was a bit unplanned and I have never had two pregnant females caged side by side before but Nainsie decided there was protection in numbers and though she was due the late hours of April 1st she pulled an early April Fools day prank and is now nursing 7 pups almost 8 hours earlier then she should have delivered. Pups look great and all have black eyes so no Cinnamon in this litter.

Pups are doing well and already pigmenting up. Nainsie has decided the nest should be under the water bottle sipper So far the bedding is not causing a problem but I so dislike when Mamas decide to nest in this spot as any moving of the bin(add food, change water bottle, Vibrations of other bins near by, etc will cause a drop of water to fall in the nest and on to the naked pink pups which usually angers the pups, and causes dampness in the nest.
