Thanks Nancy, thought that might be the case. Have ordered some mesh With pups is it better to place the mesh windows high so they can't chew e.t.c it or are they okay with being able to access it?

I'd put it high up, and just make a hole for the water bottle spout to go through.

Ditto to Winnie's answer. Be sure when doing the hole for the bottle it is not too high nor too low to have the pups be able to build up the bedding and cause it to be emptied on to the bedding or you'll soon be doing twice or more bedding clean outs DAILY until the culprit pup(s) is/are sold or placed in a different cage.

Would the hole for the water bottle be better higher up and have something for the pups to climb on to reach it. That way if the substrate is moved it won't block the bottle spout or cause leaks?

That could be a great solution CMB! Thank You WinnieTheHam& Nancy's Hamsters for replys.

Will have to try find a rock perhaps to act as the step to the bottle?

The reptile and bird section also has things that could be used for hamsters.

I have thought of a piñata that is meant for birds might be ok for hamsters. It's a woven hanging toy. Not sure if there is anything inside though.

(Bumping this thread?)

My plan now is to try breed between the 21-25th of May. The female will be 4 months (or would it be better to wait till 5?) and the male will be 7 months, so both at breeding ages. I've got a 'vet fund' of around £120 (of course I will continue to build on this have room to pay over this if needed) and there is a local vet's which does an emergency service (24/7) and emailed to check they treat hamsters.

Although I was wondering if someone could help me in terms of knowing a good set-up for when her pups arrive. At the moment she does have a water bowl but i'd of course have to change this back to a bottle (hopefully she'll have forgotten about chewing it!). I've seen glimpses of cages with pups although never a full set-up so I was hoping someone could give me more comprehensive guide on what toys are ok, and which aren't. I know wheels are a no and anything that could allow the pups to fall from height- however is a knuff platform considered 'too high'? Alice has her bed underneath it so would it be best to remove so she builds her nest in the open? (Any pictures of set-ups would be very helpful!)

Lixit I believe makes a glass bottle and there are lots of dyi options for hanging those on cages. If that helps with the chewing.
