Default Would like to breed in the future

Hey! I just joined this site because I wanted hammie advice. In the future I would like to breed Roborovski hamsters. I won't be doing so until I know everything there is to know about breeding, and that's why I need help! I would be so grateful if you all could help teach me the basics, and then I can go from there. I would like as much info about breeding pied robos as possible.

DISCLAIMER: I have seriously thought this through. I am not doing this for profit, or because I just want more cute hamsters. I am an adult with the means to care for momma, daddy and all of the pups they could possibly produce. I accept that there could be a lot of complications, including cannibalism and the mother passing away from a difficult birth.

The first thing I always suggest for a prospective new Reputable Hobby Breeder is to do as much learning of the Roborovski genetics. With the Pieds you add on a lot more studying as there is Recessive Pied, and Dominant Pied, and Head spot pied, and they each act differently when crossed with other known Robo genes(like Husky)

Then start your hunt for a well versed Robo Breeder who has a good record of healthy tame and to the NHC show standard Robos. Not all breeders are alike and you don't want to waste time and money on Robos that are weak in quality or have and unknown health issue.

A GOOD breeder will welcome you with open arms for them to mentor and guide you to a successful breeding experience. Good Mentors are becoming far and few between in the USA, but when you find one latch to them VERY tight and with all your might. A Good mentor will allow you to make decisions and learn from them ,BUT be willing to butt in if your going to make a huge mistake which would cause you to fail. They won't chastize you but will calmly and quietly explain to you why your choice of mates will be a very wrong choice, and then help gently guide you to a better choice, but then back off and let you make the final decision on who to mate to whom. A Good Mentor becomes a Great and life long friend, one who rejoices with you when you achieve the goal you set out for yourself to do, and cries with you when you have a loss in your Hamstery.

The biggest part in starting as a reputable breeder is to be prepared before it happens. So before you bring home your pedigreed Robos have their cages all set up have plenty of their needed foods. Have two separate cages all ready to go in preparedness of the two not getting along. Etc.

Though we all like to think we have the room and the time and the funds things can get out of control VERY quickly. I like to ask those who mentor under me for Syrians to search for at least three for sure sources to rehome their pups. Always remember one litter of Robos can be 8 pups or more. Once they are 5 weeks the pups need their own community cage so now your up to at the least 3 cages, One for Mom, one for Dad, and one for the weaned pups, In another week you'll need cage #4 as the male and female pups will need to be split by gender. Now if all the pups don't find new homes and you have 4 of the 8 pups. left and there are 2 males and 2 females and they start fighting your then looking at 6 cages, at the least. Though it is easy to make bins each time a new cage is added the cost to keep increases. Robos also need lots of flat floor space so things can get a bit crazy after awhile.

If your prepared and have the time space and funds then enjoy the hobby of breeding quality Robos and perhaps helping another become a Reputable Hobby breeder as their Mentor.

Thank you so much for replying! You have some good base info. I could easily get 10+ cages if I had to, and as many supplies as I need. I have a great paying job so that's why I finally decided to start leaning about this. To your knowledge, are there any good breeders in Colorado? Of course I'll be looking for myself but if you know of any I'd really appreciate it.

Check on Facebook for a Hamster group in your state. You can also check the California Hamster Association website and see if there are any breeders near you that they might know of. Reputable Breeders usually are known by word of mouth of satisfied Buyers.
