Default Belfast / Northern Ireland breeders?

I currently have a little rescue hamster from the local Pets at home so this is purely just for future reference. I have nothing against pet shops, clearly as I got my Elsa from there, but I have always thought reputable breeders better for a number of reasons. Problem is I have never heard of any breeders for hamsters of any breed within Northern Ireland. I have heard of ferrets and mice but never hamsters, degus or chinchillas. Once we get our own home I plan to buy a chinchilla as I have always wanted one and of course I will always have to have a hamster by my side.

I digress, as usual, but basically I want to know if any one knows of reputable breeders in Northern Ireland for hamsters, rats, degus or chin's?

I'd check the nearest humane societies or animal rescues near you. Since I don't live near you, I can't give out exact breeders. Tori is from a humane society and she was extremely healthy when I got her. Hope this helps!

Hi nyxietrixx,
I too am from NI not far from Belfast and about 8/9 weeks ago I wanted to get another hammy after not having one for years. I really wanted a male golden but literally could not find anywhere and after lots of research because I too wanted to get from a reputable breeder of which I soon found out there are none. I phoned, emailed and contacted everyone who used to breed. I've only joined hamster central fairly recently and you've prob already figured this out by now. If you are looking for any more in the future let me know, one ex breeder put me in touch with a pet shop in Belfast and I came home with fudge a beautiful golden banded Syrian of about 3-4 months old. She looks after very well. She gets them in from somewhere (she did say and I have never heard of this place- sounds a bit like a farm that breeds which doesn't sound so good 😕 but from what she said it is not like that sort of a place). She gets when they are 4 weeks so they are as good as her raring them and therefore they are very tame and very healthy little hamsters. I was very pleased to find this pet shop. You can tell she really cares about her animals.

I'm in the Lisburn/Belfast area too if you wouldn't mind saying what pet shop it was you got them from? If it's a reputable operation I'd like to support it, I have resigned myself to always rescuing from the p@h adoption section, which I LOVE doing don't get me wrong but I'd like to look at other options.

I know there used to be a breeder in NI but they moved, I have searched everywhere online I can think of and can't even really find any hobby breeders in the south, not with any real online presence anyway. I have thought to myself that the province could do with at least one decent hamstery, maybe in 5-6 years when I'm settled, all researched up and not renting accommodation anymore I could look into importing some great animals from the mainland and trying it but I wish someone else would take that step first

Why not you three begin a NI hamster club. Sounds like pet buyers would be delighted at the thought of proper raised Hamsters there.

I can't find one in Dublin either. I know there are breeders but they seem to supply the pet shops. Having said that the Petstop at Blanchardstown Mall is pretty good-- stocking the large cages right there and using valuable shelf space to do it (although they have a few of the crummy ones with lots of tubes; I imagine that's popular demand). They used to have fluffy bedding but the last time I was in I think they at least stopped using it for their own "stock". The Hammies for sale have a few toys in the cages in addition to the wheels-- I've seen toilet rolls which is thoughtful imo! and I've heard they are handled. They don't always have Hamsters, only now and again, so the source is not overly prolific. It's still a pet shop not a charity but I suspect someone decent is in charge of the small animals there. You could give them a ring to see if they have any and come on down.

Unless you want to take up Nancy's suggestion!

Shannonmcm i live about 10 mins from lisburn yes I will send you through the details no problem. It is about 5/10 mins outside of lisburn. I agree with you that it is important to support local independent good pet shops. So glad that you all have replied on this thread as I only have recently got back to hamster owning again totally random but so glad I did! I absolutely love them and after all the research etc am really interested and kean on breeding them perhaps in the future. Atm I am still living at home with my parents so like you shannonmcm when I get my own place and get settled its definitely something Id like to do. I would have to research loads into the breeding and genetics. I find it fascinating. My mum thinks I'm crazy lol. After all the research I'm just so eager to promote hamster breeding in NI again. It's really nice idea to adopt from p@h I never would have thought of that but for me I was a bit dubious in getting my hammy from there as I had heard some bad stories from people. Also because p@h don't really know that much about them or their sex (I could be wrong about this) Also I think it's really sad because they bring them all in from the mainland and I do think it's a big farm they come from. In saying that shannonmcm i think it's a great idea to give the ones left a loving home and I would consider that in the future. Can't believe that Elsa was left she is beautiful. A silver grey is going to be my next hamster . For me I went to this lady and would support her because i thought it was my last option and she does such a great job and there are no independents that do hamsters any more and seeing as I'm new to hammys again I wanted a fairly tame one.

Yes Phoenix ashes hamstery moved to Poland. It's funny cos up until a few weeks ago I knew nothing about any of this lol but have become a bit fanatical now. There was another place outside lisburn called radio hams hamstery and I contacted them but they have stopped also although the lady did say that she may start up again in the future. But when she does she will source from a breeder in England and bring them over. England/Scotland/Wales sounds so cool, they have hamster clubs and everything. I would love to go but then I'd come home with lots of hammys! I couldn't believe it but I found online that we used to have a hamster club in kilkeel!

Sorry rant over lol. Just so glad that there are others here who feel the same way as me about the lack of breeders here. Just seems that hamsters are not as popular here anymore and I totally agree with you Nancy's hamsters that we should be supplying our own pet shops with hammys. But I also know that it is hard work and need a lot of time and experience to do it. Then I would worry what kind of homes they all got lol.

Also if any of us do breed in the future it is great to have the contacts and support from local people piebald I think there is some hobbyist breeders in the south the ex breeder (I contacted that many people, but think it was this girl) who pointed me in the direction where I got fudge said that there are some on the south. I maybe will contact her and find out more for you? As she had said to me that be an option but like you nothing online!

I was suggesting by buyers that they would come directly to you and other hobby breeders not that you sell to the pet stores It would seem to me that a hobby breeder would have lots of inquirers if the pet stores in NI don't often have hamsters.
