Smile Possible litters

So I'm back ! Sorry for being grumpy !

So im getting a long haired black male from same breeder I got Betsy from .
I had a chat with breeder and he and betsy aren't related .
If betsy is bred I'm definitely expecting some banded babies , I will not breed her to a banded as I wouldn't wouldn't want to double up on the White belly gene as it can cause eyeless pups .
So when she is bred I am expecting a few colours Which is exciting !
And may view some robots whilst I'm there but im pretty sure I'll be getting
"Ashfords royal blue"-Bertie - black longhaired Syrian 😃
I can't fully remember betsies I think it's
" ashfords royal dove" something like that
My apologies for my attitude 🙈

Is the black male banded? Otherwise, you won't get the banded gene out of nowhere, one of the parents has to be banded. Banded is a dominant gene.

The two will likely have black pups together, but if Bertie carries cinnamon they could produce doves. Do ask the breeder for a pedigree (and if you didn't get one with Betsie, she likely has a copy). If you provide the full genotype, or even the phenotype of the parents, it's easy to figure out possibilities.

However, I do urge you to sit down and think before you breed. Being able to predict the colours in a litter, via genetics, is a big part about breeding. While it's great you're getting breeder hamsters, you need knowledge on your part too. You already know about white belly, which is a great place to start. But there are other lethal genes for hamsters too. It's worth really digging deep into the world of Syrian genetics and learning as much as you possibly can before considering to breed.

I spent several months learning, and while I felt confident for my first litter, it soon disappeared and I was frantically asking questions! The forums are a great place to learn, and a great resource, but don't forget the knowledge you need to learn. That's self-motivated, and so very important to making sure you're breeding ethically.

It's also worth asking for health records of the parents and their lines, since your #1 priority should always be health and type.

Genetics can be hard - I found it easier than learning how to see the differences in type though.

Good luck.

Well, breeding a ham shouldn't be taken lightly. I'm too scared to do it myself because there is always the chance that something could go terribly wrong, either when introducing the male to the female (syrians are the hardest to manage with this), the pregnancy itself (the female could have any number of problems during this time), or even delivery (a pup could be too large or deformed in such a way for the female to pass naturally and cause a blockage in the birth canal). You can very well expect to lose the female in this situation, as well as the entire litter.

Then keeping the whole room as quiet and calm as possible for the mother to raise her babies and not feel threatened in such a way that she would cull them herself.

It's honestly too much for me to even consider breeding at all.

Well if memory serves me right Betsie is a Dove banded. If that is correct and you breed her to a Black male who does NOT carry for Cinnamon then all your gonna get color wise is not many as both your parents have two genes for black which means all you can get with these two parents will be Blacks with and without Betsie's band gene unless she has two genes for banded then you'll end up with a whole litter of Black Banded pups.
