Default Pregnancy Belly?

Look like a pregnancy belly to you guys? She's starting to get pretty big...or is that just me?

I'm famous (not) for my long fingernails; but today during volleyball I broke (both of the) thumbnails I had off. So excuse my thumb lol.

I wonder what the pregnancy-rate statistics are for a hamster that mates when in heat. You already know she was in heat when she mated with Colby, so it seems like on here, the likeliness is near 100%?

How long was it since she and Colby were together? She does look like she has a belly on her, not sure what her belly looked like before. Is she eating and drinking more?

Yeah...I bet they're pretty high. We have lots of litters on this forum, haha!

9 days I think. She was a skinny thing before! She's eating a TON lately. Not sure about her water though.

Yes yes yes yes yes. Why aren't we funding this?

I'm really not worried anymore. I had it in mind that you aren't supposed to breed pet-shop hams like Mozza, but people are breeding pet shop hams on this forum all the time so what's to worry about? And Mozzarella doesn't carry the lethal gene, she's nearly old enough and I'm actually sort of happy and excited for pups.

I was really unsure about Molly until about four days ago...so just give it a bit of time and assume that she is!

You aren't supposed to. It's not just the health of the mother and father you have to take into consideration - there could be a billion different illnesses with either line which could prove to be lethal to pups. Just look at Hekomi's recent loses - there must be a genetic problem there but obviously the parents of those two appear fine otherwise they wouldn't be healthy enough to actually breed in the first place.

Anyone purposely breeding pet store hamsters or hamsters that they don't know the background of is incredibly irresponsible. Accidents do happen but doing it on purpose... Just makes me sad tbh.

Amazed that you aren't worried too... I'd be terrified to lose her because of an accidental mating.

I'm not going to call anyone out; but I know of a few people who breed pet store hamsters and no one calls them out on it, or at least only a few people do. I used to care but after a few threads of me "scolding" and nobody listening I gave up and I don't even say anything anymore.

Meh, I was worried but there's no point, really. I think better when I'm not worried, so I decided to not worry about it, to go with the flow haha.

Just because others do it (and in my opinion they are incredibly irresponsible), doesn't mean everyone should. Doesn't make it OK. I've not been back that long on the forum after a break and as far as I know I've not seen any but then I avoid a lot of the breeder threads purely because it makes me so angry when people do breed from pet store hamsters.

Good that you do better when not worried. Don't think I'd be able to stop myself from worrying, I'd be worrying if I had a pregnant female from the best lines in the universe let a lone a pet store ham!

Honestly how many females of a good age actually die during labour anyway?

I was gutted to hear about Hekomi's losses, but I'm not entirely sure its "store bought hamsters" that was the problem there... In my opinion, it was the breeder handing them over to the store too soon. Dying pups happens. But any breeder should know when the pups are ready to go on to new homes... and the pups shouldn't just be gotten rid of asap in order to make a quick buck...
As many have observed most breeder's breeding for stores dont care about their animals, they care only about getting paid, as much and as often as possible...
How can anyone compare breeding two pets within your own loving home to that? at the end of the day, yes, they may have been store bought pets, and no, the backgrounds may not be fully chartered down to the letter... but there is every chance that with the correct care, nutrition and love in a home that sees them as pets and not walking cash, I'd say litter loss is greatly reduced, and the chances of poorly hammy's being sold before they've been checked entirely, is pretty slim.

Accidental litters happen. But at least she's doing the right thing and she's standing by the mother and the pups and she's going to make it work and give the pups a great start in life - certainly a better start than Rodent Farms give!!

Good luck Colby & Corrie and WELL DONE TO BOTH OF YOU FOR BEING BRAVE ENOUGH TO STEP UP AND LOVE YOUR ACCIDENTAL LITTERS x
