Lightbulb Is my Chinese dwarf pregnant?!

I have had two female Chinese dwarf hamster for roughly 3 weeks now. At first they got on really well and no problems. Pepper, a grey Chinese dwarf has grown a lot bigger than Salt, a white Chinese dwarf. I've noticed Pepper has got fat around her hips and stomach. She also is a lot less active than Salt and burrows and sleeps a lot. Pepper has also taken a dislike to Salt recently, chasing her around and nipping her tail!

When we bought Salt, the lady said she thinks she was female, but I know it can be difficult to sex them I have heard. Pepper is just a lot more chilled than Salt and sleeps a lot of the time.

Can someone please offer some advice? I have separated them for now as I don't want Salt getting hurt.

Please respond ASAP

If they are fighting, separate them immediately. Set up two tanks and let then live alone. Chinese hamsters are solitary animals and should not be in pairs.

It's only difficult to tell their gender when they're very young. Once they reach maturity, it's very easy to tell which hamsters are male (they have balls, to put it bluntly). If your hamsters are DEFINITELY female, then the weight gain and lethargy may be a result of stress from being in a fighting situation.

Yeah... It shouldn't be difficult to tell chinese hamsters genders. If they're fighting I'd keep them separate and try to confirm the genders of both hamsters

I have separated them and have tried to sex them both, but they are so small it's hard to tell at the moment. Is there any signs I should be looking for if Pepper is pregnant? Thanks for the fast replies x

If she is pregnant she'll probably get rounder, build a large nest and probably eat more than usual

maybe you have 2 females. They usually are not sold until they are 6 weeks old and when we get them in at that age you can clearly tell they are males. Maybe you could post a pic of each of their backsides

Here is a picture of my boy Beanie (Chinese hamster). When they are old enough to see male parts, this is what to expect (note large bulge at behind):

It is possible but it sounds more likely that Pepper has grown much bigger due to the fact she has been bullying Salt and stressing her out and denying her food.
You have done the right thing in separating them and it would not be a good idea to put them back together. It is VERY rare for Chinese females to live together after they are pups and they can fight very badly. Keep her on pregnancy watch for another few weeks and also watch for testicles appearing. It sounds unlikely she is pregnant though if they are both still looking like females.

Separating them was the best move as it sounds as though trouble was brewing between them and Chinese hamsters are solitary even though some members have managed to keep pairs, but it`s not common. You would know if one was a male just by the very visible scrotal sack, as you can see from Esmy`s image! Females don`t `bulge` at the rear end like this so much. They are fab little hamsters (although I like to think of them as mice without long tails!) x
