Default 22 days since possible dwarf hamster mating

Hey everyone (:

I've posted threads before explaining all this but I'll just give a quick description for those who don't know.

I got two dwarf hammys and thought they where both boys, they lived together at the pet store and then with me for roughly a week before I discovered little Gimli was a girl, I planned on buying a new cage the next day as I could see Gizmo was trying to mate with her. I put a cardboard piece in their cage to seperate them but by morning it had been chewed through.

I seperated them and they where both fine but Gimli has been sleeping a lot lately, always in her nest. Today is 22 days since it happened and she's not in her nest. She has some cardboard rolls (from the middle of a toilet roll) in her cage, earlier I heard a scratching and discovered she was inside the roll, she's been doing this every so often for the last 3 hours, then I went back to discover the roll had been dragged away and she had buried herself in the sawdust where the roll use to be. But every now and then I hear the scratching. Just literally this very second I heard her squeaking in her cage which she didn't do before.

When I saw her I thought she looked slightly fatter but I dunno if that was coz I know she might be pregnant and my brain is just tricking me. She is a very tiny hammy.

Anyway, does it sound like she could be giving birth tonight? And if so, what do I do?

Thanks a lot in advance (:

It's definitely possible she'll give birth tonight. Just leave her alone, and if you see or hear babies stay calm. Hammies know what to do

Thanks a lot for the reply (:

I'm worrying a lot about her, since I made the post I haven't heard a peep out of her! I can't see her anywhere and she's not in her nest so I guess she's still burrowed away! I just filled her bowl and she normally runs straight out to eat but she didn't, I guess I'll just have to wait and see!

Thanks (:

Are you hoping for a litter or for just a fat hammy?

It's a waiting game!

I'm not really sure! Haha abit of both, I'm a first time hammy owner and I haven't had them that long so I'm abit scared of her having babies but I will still be very happy at the same time if she does!

I'll just leave her be for the night and see what the morning brings! I'll keep you updated haha!

Thanks (:

For what its worth, I remember when we fostered Petree (a hybrid who we knew was pregnant when we said we'd foster her). Its exciting but terrifying isn't it?

It worked out well for us and Petree and I'm sure it'll work out fine for you and Gimli too Good luck waiting until pups wander if she has them though... We're waiting for mouse pups at the moment (new pet arrived pregnant) and we're at that time where they should start wandering soon so I'm having the odd hour where I'm rediculously impatient now, then I go back to being patient for a bit... And then I'm really impatient again
The ham pups saved me from this by wandering a bit early, the mouse pups are getting near the later end of normal now and its driving me a tad bonkers lol

Awww how exciting for you to have had all those pups around and to have new ones on the way! Is the mouse currently in the process of birthing? Or is she reaching the end of her pregnancy? What an exciting and nerve wracking time for you! They'll all be so cute when they're born (: will you be uploading pics?

I noticed Gimli about an hour ago eating her food and she's now running on her wheel ever since, I dunno if that's normal behaviour for a ham close to birthing? She was acting very strange earlier but she seems to be acting normal now and from what I can tell there are no pups in the cage. Now I'm sort've disapointed coz I did/do want her to have pups but I guess it saves me a lot of time and effort if she's not as I work and am at college ):

I'm sort've thinking she might not be pregnant now but I dunno! She seems okay tho (:

I would remove the wheel for now, in the off chance that Gimli is actually pregnant and/or giving birth. When pups begin to wander, they will often follow their mom onto the wheel, and get hurt while she is running on it.

If, after a few days, she doesn't have pups, and your absolutely sure that she wasn't pregnant, then you can put the wheel back.

Our mouse pups are 18 days old today and I'll be putting some pics up on HC in a bit They've finally left the nest and stopped driving me bonkers waiting for them lol. We knew Mum was pregnant because she showed it, then we waited a few days with her and a friend moved to a tank for the birth before I started hearing the odd squeak one afternoon. Since then its been a big waiting game except for when we checked on and sexed the pups once (with mouse pups its a lot safer than with hamster pups - you should never interfere with hamster pups before they've started leaving the nest).

Its been over a year since the hamster pups (nearly 18 months now which has gone quite fast really) but its an experience I think I'll always remember pretty well. I've not forgotten the moments of amazement, excitement and outright panic and terror yet.

I'd second the advice on taking the wheel out if you can. Does it look like Gimli has lost weight at all? If she's out and about theres a slim chance that'll give you an idea (that said do be careful - new Mums often dont appreciate the humans peering at them too much)
If you can't be sure I'd wait a few days and listen out for squeaks, then as HollyHamster said once you're completely sure she's not had pups you can put the wheel back.

The main thing with pups is that your pet is ok at the end of it really, it sounds like Gimli will be so thats great news in its own right
