Red face Breeding Lennon and Sylvi - 7 babies!

My girlfriend and I got two dwarf Campbell's hamsters about a month ago and decided we would let them have a litter or two.

So far the whole process is going wonderfully! There are seven babies, and they are about 8 days old now.

Here are a few pictures of the parents. Sylvi, the black and white mottled one, is the mom. Lennon, the other one, is the dad. He's such a good dad! The other day when feeding them, my girlfriend and I noticed that Sylvi was only sitting on five of the babies. We thought she had eaten two of them. It wasn't until Lennon started moving around that we realized Lennon was sitting on the other two.

Once the babies are old enough, I am going to be taking Lennon and one of the baby boys. My girlfriend is keeping Sylvi and one of the girls.

I'm really interested in seeing what colors the babies will turn out to be! I know that Sylvi is a black mottled, but does anyone know what color Lennon is??? Is he some sort of platinum? Thanks in advance!

Their first day with us!

Lennon. What color is he???

Sylvi

Their lives before babies!

I will post pictures of the babies when their eyes are open.

Both Sylvi and Lennon are gorgeous
I'd like to point out some things however, the wheel Sylvi is running on is unsafe as it can cause bumblefoot you can replace it with wheels like the wodent wheel, or a silent spinner
Second, are Sylvi and Lennon pet store hamsters?

I would also mention that Sylvi may be pregnant again, already, as they can mate literally just after producing a litter! I would therefore keep an eye open for more babies ....probably in about 10 days....and if you leave Lennon in it is likely to continue and will wear poor Sylvi out...

Congrats on the babies though

Yes, both Sylvi and Lennon are from a pet store. I know...not the best place to get a hamster. But they both seemed very healthy when we got them, and continue to seem very healthy. They are both very sweet and have wonderful temperaments. Lennon has never tried to bite, and Sylvi has only nipped lightly when she was very pregnant.

I realize that Sylvi is probably pregnant again. I am taking Lennon and a boy once the babies are old enough, and my girlfriend is keeping Sylvi and a girl. This way there won't be a third litter! And we both get to appreciate the beauty of these hamsters.

Yes, currently we took the wheel out of the cage so that the babies cannot hurt themselves on it. We plan on getting new wheels for them- most likely the flying saucer wheel. I have a large one of those for my hedgehog and he loves it.

Thank you - I think they're both beautiful as well! I can't wait to post pictures of the babies. The hamsters currently live with my girlfriend, so I haven't seen the babies for a couple days. It looks to me like there may be a couple chocolate mottled, possibly one like Lennon but with a dark brown color?, a black one, and some that I have no idea what the colors will be like.

Any idea what color Lennon is?

I think the pet store question was meant to point out that they are unlikely to be pure bred Cambells and are more likely to be hybrids. They could also be siblings which can mean more problems with the offspring's health

Certainly it is recommended that you assume that they all may carry higher risk of diabetes and feed them accordingly. You may also want to watch them more closely for signs of this.

I hope Sylvi can cope with the second litter when the other is still so young...and if you do not remove Lennon before that litter is born then the risk is of a third successive litter I am afraid :/

As slatted mentioned, I asked if they are pet store hamsters as breeding pet store hamsters can lead to all sorts of issues with the pups such as them being born blind, deaf, etc. It was unwise to have your hamsters bred even once. If Sylvi will survive all this, I suggest you never attempt breeding without proper knowledge.
Hamster breeders don't breed their hammies without knowing their genetic background in order to avoid the issues I mentioned. Breeding "just for fun" can in your case lead to hamster pups that might never be able to be rehomed and it can also take it's toll on Sylvi.

Welcome to the forum.

Both mom and dad are indeed very beautiful. I am unsure of the colours but hopefully someone can advise you shortly.

Nice to see you have already taken the wheel out and making the tank more suitable for mum.

Dad should be removed now so mom can get on with raising the kids without daddy interfering

Have a look in the breeding section for when to separate and how to sex the babies.

I am sure the members will all offer help and advice during the litter growing and support you in doing so xxx

I know this now... When we got the hamsters and decided to breed them, we didn't know about a lot of the issues that could arise. After seeing them mate, I learned about some of the potential issues such as the toothless/eyeless whites among other things which made me nervous. If I knew then what I know now, we probably wouldn't have bred them. We rushed into the idea prematurely.

That being said, I have been researching a ton ever since and feel prepared for what is happening. All of the babies look to be growing properly and they're quite cute. I can't wait to hold them and show them off! haha Now that the babies are here and we're approaching Day 9, I realize I'm very fortunate in how this experience is turning out. I am glad I've had this opportunity to watch these little pups grow! It's very fascinating.

I'm glad to hear all seems to be going well and the babies are thriving
The father looks like a Normal mottled to be honest maybe even satin?
They could be siblings. I'd remove dad regardless before 18 days as mum is most likely expecting another litter. If there are a lot and they are well grown you could take 1st set of babies away at 3 weeks and put the boys with their father. You can leave the girls with mum and they will help but they will struggle in the tank that size with all those hamsters! The older ones will still try and suckle and may compete with the newborns too so it would probably be best to let them have their own single sex cages till they are ready to home. Don't let her get pregnant again as it will be very hard on her. This means not leaving any sons in also as they can mate with her! It could lessen her lifespan to have back to back litters and it isn't fair as well as the fact you will have to home or keep them all... you will end up with dozens of interbred hams if you are not careful so sex them properly and separate in time
Good luck and looking forward to seeing them when their eyes are open.

Oh okay. Yes, I'm definitely thinking that Lennon is a satin. I was thinking he might be a platinum agouti? But I don't know about the color. I wasn't sure if he was mottled or not.

Yes, we plan on taking the dad out in the next week and a half or so. Then we'd put all the boys in with the dad, and all the girls in their own cage except for the one that will be living with the mom.

I may need help sexing when the time comes... I know the differences between them and have looked at several pictures, but I think it will be difficult when the babies are so tiny!

Thank you, souffle!
