How to tell if my hamster is pregnant?
hey i could use some help i think my girl Chi Chi might be pregnant but i couldn't really find any pictures of pregnant dwarf hamsters tho by the sings from what i read about the mood and being aggressive plus she is not fast and active as she was before and in the last 2 days she is fighting all the time with her partner. From what i was told at the pet shop where i got the male hamster the seller said he wont be fertile at least a month or 2 so i had plenty time to think if she should have babies or not but it would help if anyone on this forum have any pictures of pregnant hamsters so i can be sure

Er... How old are they? And is she living with a male?
If she's living with a male I'd assume she's pregnant and separate the hams, put her in a tank-style cage if you can. You won't be able to be sure until literally a day or two before the birth - then she may get a big round pregnant belly (but don't rely on it as a sign). More prominent nipples is another sign.

Not to be mean or anything, but breeding a pet shop hamster is not recommended. You just don't know its lineage and genetic history. You should have done a boat load more research on hamster genetics and whatnot before even thinking about breeding hamsters.

Re: How to tell if my hamster is pregnant?
You should never allow a male and a female to live together incase they breed. Hamster pups are separated into the sexes at four weeks old precisely because by that age the males can be starting to become fertile.
How is your female doing? And are they separate now? If you leave the father in there he'll just father a second litter as soon as the pups are born

Yeah, just waiting is good. Pups usually start leaving the nest around or before 14 days old.

Re: How to tell if my hamster is pregnant?
You should most definitely wait. It'll be much safer for both mum and babies as there'll be less stress and they won't be disturbed. They need to be left alone and in a quiet area with not much disturbance or handling bar the water and food change for a good couple of weeks.
Sexondly they're all going to need a lot more protein such as egg white/porridge/maybe some cheese/chicken peices etc. and fresh fruit and veg too when they're old enough to begin to eat that on their own, but considering they're dwarves it'll probably need to be small pieces anyway.
Hope this helps.

Re: How to tell if my hamster is pregnant?
Yeah... Do not risk messing about right now. When they're two weeks old, have their eyes open and are leaving the nest you can risk a slight change (just replacing the wet corner) if you have to. We personally left it until 17 days to do any cleaning though.
We cleaned most of the cage at 24 days, but may have been able to do that sooner.
If you have a litter the cage is likely to smell and you just have to live with it. Ours stank to high heaven when we changed the toilet area at 17 days, but cleaning it much earlier would've risked the pups so a smelly cage was definetly the better option.
