where in the US are you? what kind of hamsters are you looking for? there are a few breeders on here based in the US, who will have pedigree pups. however I would have to question your intentions about getting a male and a female. are you planning on breeding? if so, what are your reasons? I'm not trying to be rude, of course not, it's just that we here like to make sure that you know what you are doing, what you are getting yourself into, and that you have a legit reason to be wanting to breed. sorry if you have mentioned it previously in some other thread, I'm in and out of HC so I don't keep up with all the threads! better to ask and be safe than sorry though, right?

The U.S. is in need of some quality breeders so that more people have an option of buying a hamster that isn't from the petstore and possibly "rodent farms". This is a serious undertaking that requires massive knowledge with genetics and money for vet bills, and a large amount of cages incase the babies aren't sold. I hope that you have the experience and the knowledge that goes with being a successful breeder and that you aren't just doing it for fun. If you've read a lot about it and are ready to start and know about white bellied hamsters, that you can't breed two satins together, which color groups you can or can't breed together, (I'm talking about Syrian Hamsters) or what colors you're actually breeding for as well as tempermant or hair length, then I don't see why you shouldn't; if you have the space, money, and cages. Things can go wrong easily and it can cost a fortune with the vet or you could be left with 20 hamsters that all need their own cage.

Starting with a pedigree pair is the very best thing you can do. But honestly I have to discourage anyone from starting up breeding since it's such a huge responsibility and consuming endeavor. What kind of hamsters are you thinking of breeding?

You can get good quality hamsters from good breeders, but a good breeder will not sell to you if they think you want a breeding pair, which it sounds like you do, without making sure you know a huge amount about breeding. It is not as simple as putting two hams together and getting cute fuzzy babies, and in fact, breeding just because you want the cute babies is not the best reason to do it. I seriously advise you to just stick with keeping hams for now.

There are few reputable, quality breeders in the US. People interested in breeding hamsters in the US are at a disadvantage -- there just aren't a lot of places to start. Pet store hamsters are often the only place for new US breeders to get animals, and that isn't ideal. Sure, you can find a gem here and there, but you have no idea what background the hamster has.

Also, consider Johnny down the street had hamsters escape and mate, so he calls himself a hamster breeder. Anyone can call themselves a breeder, but it doesn't indicate quality or ethics.

The US hamster fancy is almost non-existent. There's a group backed by reputable breeder Holmden Hill Haven (radiocricket here on HC) that is working to change that. I've just been telling people to hang tight!

I do applaud you wanting quality hamsters as a start. And honestly, you need to learn more about genetics, health, type, etc. before you get any hamsters to breed.

So many things can go wrong with a litter. It is important to understand what you're getting into.

Please don't take anything as being mean or extremely discouraging. People here, including myself, just want to see people make the best decisions they can for themselves and the hamsters.

oh, sorry for jumping to conclusions, it was only because you posted that you wanted a male and a female in the Breeding Hamsters section that made me think you were planning on breeding them!

you still haven't said what kind of hamsters you're interested in though? Syrians? dwarves? if so, what kind? on the Hamster Breeders in the US/Canada thread, I've found:

OPERATION NOTO HAMSTRY
in Scotchtown, NY. breeds Campbell's, though according to the site, since acquiring a new puppy they're postponing breeding hamsters, at least til 2013. however, they are saying they'd be able to put you through to other breeders, so perhaps they are worth asking!
