I can't wait to see the babies! You can post pics when their eyes open remember.

Re: I Have Received a Pregnant Dwarf
I will! I have been reading that males actually help in the birthing and raising of the pups, but I have also read that it can make the mother nervous. Should I leave him and risk it or take him out soon? (Babies are expected around the end of this month!)

Take him out before the birth. They will rebreed within days of the birth if you don't.

Re: I Have Received a Pregnant Dwarf Urgent help!
The info is brilliant, Pearl is in a small cage at present, is there anyway we can move her, plus the box with the babies in, to a larger cage? Last night I built a cardboard run and put both cages into it with the doors open to both. Pearl had a lovely explore around and then took some new soft bedding from the new cage back with her. She is in a very quiet room with subdued lighting and was relaxed and energetic.
The huge problem is that we are flying away for a month's annual leave (we are expats going home), and her current cage, though fine for just Pearl, is ging to be too small very quickly. We will be back when the babies are 5 weeks old, I am concerned the cage is just going to be too small and not sure what to do!!! Any helpful suggestions?

Re: I Have Received a Pregnant Dwarf
Who will be watching the hamsters while you are gone? They could change them into a larger cage when appropriate.

Re: I Have Received a Pregnant Dwarf
Someone needs to sex the babies and separate them before 5 weeks or else they will mate with each other possibly! Dwarf babies can be sexed and separated from mum at around 4 weeks maximum, sometimes three and a half if she is getting fed up with them. You can leave the girls with mum and introduce the boys to dad. It's best if you try and get homes for them though and maybe keep one girl for mum and one boy for dad as company if they get along. You could get the carer to move them when their eyes are open into the larger cage along with a lot of the bedding from the old cage to keep the scent.

Re: I Have Received a Pregnant Dwarf
I thought I would let everyone know, Phoebe is due any day now. She weighs 2.4 ounces, as opposed to the 1.8 when she first was pregnant.

I was shocked by that number for a moment because I've grown accustomed to everyone using grams!
