Default Roborovski Hamsters - Not females after all - new born pups help

Hi

We bought a couple of Roborovski Hamsters back in May and the pet shop said they were both female.

We've just discovered 5 or 6 wrinkly little fellows in the hamster cage, so obviously that was wrong.

Some are in a nest, some are wriggling around the cage, it's a Savic Hamster Heaven cage, so it's pretty big.

One question, help! What should our next step be, obviously the hamsters will have to be separated at some point, is that right now.

What do we have to do to help with little wrinkly fellows?

We'll give the pet shop a call tomorrow, but we've gone all worried right this second!

Any advice appreciated.

Take the male out or the female might have another litter in 20-30 days. Don't touch the babies, mom will gather them and put them in a nest if she is a good mom.

Remove the dad at once, the female can get pregnant again very soon after giving birth. Aside from that, leave the babies alone, do not touch anything, do not disturb the cage apart from to give food and water (try keeping this at the other end of the cage from the nest), and remove the wheel. You may also want to pile some more bedding material like torn up toilet roll (fluffy cotton wool type bedding is bad for hams, although if you have some in the cage at the moment I'd leave it until the babies are old enough to be handled before removing it) at the other end of the cage from the nest, so mum can make the nest bigger if she wants. Feed the mother high protein treats such as mealworms, cooked egg white, boiled chicken etc. Once the babies have opened their eyes at about two weeks, you can start handling them (and post pictures for us!) -- and clean the cage, as it'll probably need a clean by then!

There's a guide to sexing Roborovski hamsters in the Robo section of the forum -- once the babies are around four weeks old you should split them into single sex groups to prevent something like this happening again

This happened to us also....although we had some warning and we were prepared for the birth. Our babies are now 11 days old and just starting to come out of nest...not even sure how many there are as all i have done is change the food and water and not gone near them at all. I was going to ask when they could be handled and the cage cleaned cos its really starting to pong now after a fortnight! So now i know that i was wondering will the babies be eating solid food now and what are some examples of good things to give them. I've been giving mam the things mentioned above along with fresh fruit, veg and her normal muesli and peanuts (which are her faves!).
