Default When will my hams give birth?

Hi i have a female dwarf campbells hamster whi is pregnant for the first time i know there gestation periods but i have no idea when she got pregnant, heres a list of things shes been doing to help you give me an aproximate time,
• she has made a new nest
• very, VERY large stomach looks about to burst and has made her "pear-shaped"
• hyper and running around
• collecting alot of food,

And for the last point, last night she dug a hole in the boddeing as if she was about to take a poop (obviously not though) and she stretched her whole body and i could see she was clearly squeesing and pushing, she was also washing herself down below... . Anyway im positive that it was an attempt at giving birth but didnt work. That was last night at 11:00 pm it is now the next dat at 4:00 pm, aproximate amount of time?

Please dont lecture me though, because it was accidental and wernt meant to breed, and yes i have homes for all them

Once they are noticably pregnant they will usually give birth within the next 2-3 days. So she is definitley at the end of the gestation period.
If she has been noticable for this long or longer I would be concerned that she is having difficulty giving birth and needs help from a vet.
If she hasn't been noticable that long then I would leave her in the quiet so she can give birth in the calmest environment possible.

I hope everythings ok for her x

Really soon I'd imagine. Dwarfs don't look pregnant, as in huge in the stomach, until the last couple of days. It's hard to judge time of birth in all hamsters as they do it whenever the babies are ready to be born.

Thanks alot to both people who commenred, thats very helpful oh and 1 more thing is it normal for the mother to not let the father sleep in her nest? They usually do sleep with eachother and now shes pregnant he sleeps in a differant hut on the 2nd floor? She isnt chasing him out or anything he just sleeps on his own? Haha. And should the father stay with the mother during the whole thing? They are campbells.
Thanks alot

I don't intend to lecture you, but are you planning on separating your male and female if the mating was unintentional?

You should seperate them. Because as soon as she gives birth she'll be heat and get pregnant again which will not be good for her and maybe even make her eat some of the first litter. You should not keep a male and female together in the same game because they will keep on breeding.

Thanks alot everyone you were very helpfull, and correct in saying it should be soon, she gave birth about an hour and a half ago, im not sure how many there are because i cant see into the nest without moving stuff away, which i will not do obviously, its her first pregnancy and she hasnt eaten any of them yet... Yet:L anyway at what age will the pups be least likely to be eaten by the mother? Basically when are they safe from potential cannabalism? Thanks

Don't quote me about this, but I thinks it's 2 weeks? I mean like, that's when you can touch the babies and stuff, so you'd think that they would be able to fend for themselves a little more, so they'd be able to stop mum. If anything, mum would just reject them, but that's when they eat and drink on their own, so with the right care if mum DOES reject them, theres a higher chance they'd survive.

Glad to read that you are seperating them. That is a good choice for your hamsters. It is also healthy for the mom, so she won't be pregnant back to back. I know at least with Syrians the father can eat the babies as well. I'm not sure if this applies to dwarves but just another reason to seperate (in case).

And yes it is 2 weeks, I just read a seperate post by Souffle where she stated they must be left alone 2 weeks. And remember not to post pictures until their eyes are open.

In a seperate post by Vanilla-Yazoo, an experienced breeder (love me some Hush Puppy), She stated the following...

"first off, give her some nice protein food, boiled/scrambled egg, chicken/turkey (babyfood or fresh) porridge, i give cat biscuits too for calcium/protien.

nest, if she has not given birth, clean the cage, as if she dose, you cannot clean them untill all the eyes of the babys are open, sometimes 18+ days if the runt is behind.

remember not to touch the nest, babys or anything near them, My girl lucy gave birth last week, you can see my thread for comparison to a definite pregnant hamster. she will become larger on the hips, will give off a slight smell (nothing like heat level) she will get frustrated, dont handle her if she gets big like that incase you disturb her too much."
