Red face Determining mom..

You may or may not know that I adopted 5 hybrid girls from an animal shelter a few months ago. Their foster mom said that one was the mom and 1 daughter was from her first litter (November birth) and 3 were from her December litter. Anyways, when I adopted them, their foster mom didn't know which was the mom and which ham was from either of the litters. The girls are almost identical, and even I don't know who is who, until I play with them (except Carley is the smallest).

My question is this... while playing with Cyleigh last night, I noticed that her nipples are a lot larger than the other hams and she has a little bit of a lump/extra skin near her holes underneath. Is this because she is the mom of the girls??? The mother was born around September (although the foster mom was unsure of the date since she was already born), so she was a very young mother. I was wondering if this isn't the sign of being a mother, if there are any other visible signs. The only behavior that she exhibits that is different than the other girls, is she is the only ham who "nips" at my hands occasionally. I've always wondered who the mom was and which girl was from the first litter... Thanks for any help you can give

Hiya,

Most females that have suckled babies will have slight fur loss around each nipple, so look for this.

With my robos when i keep babies with their parents i have found that the whiskers are usually a very good indicator of age as the older a hamster is the thicker the whiskers seem to be and also they seem to be a longer and darker too. This might help you too

Thanks, I didn't think of the whiskers! I will have to look for that when I get home Hopefully only being a few months apart I'll at least be able to see a slight difference!
