When my WW had pups I had her in a 13''x18'' bin cage - I'm not really a breeder so I wouldn't say I have much experience but I did find that having a fairly small size worked well because she freaked out a bit when the pups started trying to run off, and I think her having less space to try to catch them kept her less stressed

that is exactly the reason i rather use smaller cages for mums with babys

Yeah I can definitely see the reasoning behind smaller cages. I'll pick up some smaller 60 x 40 cm bins, and then see how things go

This is a bit of an unrelated question, but when you breed your Chinese do you put the male in the female's cage for mating, or vice versa, or somewhere else all together. Just curiosity
