Re: White Bellied Gene.
I have found a web-site complaining most of genetic defects possible in hamsters.
I couldn't resist the temptation not to share it.
Genetic Defects
PLEASE INFORM ME IF IT HAS SOME THING WRONG IN IT AND YOU SEE IT

Re: White Bellied Gene.
Roan and Whitebellied ARE the same thing. They're the same gene. It's confusing I know, as when Whitebellied is combined with Cream (and Cream combination colors), you get a Roan effect. When it is combined with any other color, you get a "white belly".
Thankfully, "Wh" is easy enough to spot for those with an experienced eye. However, as novice breeders don't have that experience, care needs to be taken when selecting breeding animals and pairs. This is why breeding from unknown hamsters is ill-advised.
As for the Anophthalmic Whites' life span, it is not shortened at all nor are they toothless.

Re: White Bellied Gene.
thank you so much.
about being toothless, I have seen some toothless cases in the internet and red it in an article. Im not sure about being toothless, But anyway thats something scary.
I have red something really really strange in a page written in Persian about breeding. the Breeder explained about WH and after that he said "most of the times I ignore this rule because some times a combination between two Wh hamster will lead to a fantastic look hamster. I give double WH hamsters to my baby cats to grow up."
:S that looks completely wild. how wild a human can be??

If I'm reading that correctly... this "breeder" is knowingly producing eyeless whites while trying to get a "fantastic" hamster, and is feeding them to their cats???????
I'm pretty sure this "fantastic" hamster could be bred without using two Wh hamsters and without killing babies...

Re: White Bellied Gene.
I just depressed when saw that website. He thinks mixing two Wh hamsters would cause a fantastic hamster.
I have sent him photo of Hammy Which every said he is really cute and his mother+father. I think It can surprise him and make him stop killing him.

Re: White Bellied Gene.
A roan hamster has the Wh gene. On creams they roam and agouti they get white bellys. If you don't know this then you should not be breeding.
The hamsters can carry that gene quite far back.
A hamster a may appear not to carry the gene, but there are tests you can try to see if they carry it but it is never certain especially with a hamster with no background.
There are some colours like lethal grey that you must avoid, with no pedigree you can't garuntee it.
I would not breed if I was you. You don't know the history, you don't know how genes work.
Eta:I didn't get to page 2, so didn't see the post Janice made. But I second it all!

Re: White Bellied Gene.
Research the genetics first, then breed responsibly. Whitebellied isn't something you want to take chances on.

When Syrians get a double dose of the Wh gene they are eyeless and not toothless. When Campbells get a double dose of the mottled gene they are eyeless and toothless!
BTW I agree with the consensus you should not breed! If you are willing to risk bringing defective lives into this world in an effort to escape your emotions you might want to consider therapy. Therapy isn't a bad thing but breeding animals in an attempt to escape intolerable reality is unhealthy for you and the animals!

Re: White Bellied Gene.
I'm really sorry to say this as I have followed these threads with growing worry!! I appreciate there are lots of questions and information you need but why are you breeding hamsters before you acquire this information! Some of your questions have been basic hamster husbandry yet here you are breeding already!!
Hamsters are animals!! they are live beings and simply asking a question about longevity of deformed hamsters implies that you intend to breed anyway and worry about it when they are born!! Perhaps it is a misunderstanding of language but it still worries me!
