Exclamation Hamster is Possibly Pregnant?

So, I went away on a trip to see a friend last week, and came back to some pretty interesting news.

When I was away, my little sister decided to take out 2 of my hamsters, even though I specifically told her to only have 1 out at a time, and she happened to let them get too close, and they mated. So she told my mom, and they decided not to tell me until I got home. So I got home, and they told me, and I almost had a heart attack. It would've been okay if they were from breeders, but they aren't. Ginger Powder was from a pet store and HoneyDew was dropped at my doorstep in a shoe box when she was about a month old. So I don't know either of their backgrounds and I am totally scared. . Any advice would be helpful, too. Also, we figured out that the babies will probably be born on May 1st or 2nd. I know to give her protein and make sure she's stress-free.

Here are pictures of both:

HoneyDew (Girl, 7 months)

Ginger Powder (Boy, 6 months)

They're beautiful furbabies. With a mom and dad like that they should be little beauties. All I know is that she should be kept stress free and plenty of protein. Good luck with your tiny surprises xxx

Definitely treat her like she is pregnant. It is possible the mating didn't "take", but act like it did.

You will want to be sure to give her cage/bin a good clean out before the babies are due and take out her wheel and any items that might harm the babies. If there are multiple levels in the cage, I recommend switching her right now to a single level one.

Others will have much better advice.

Best of luck!

Like auntieAnnie said, best to treat her like she is pregnant. If she is pregnant, you should start to see signs around day 12 or 13 on more sleek bodied females. Her sides will bulge, her nipples will start to enlarge, and her activity level may increase in the days leading up to birth.

Give her lots of high-protein foods like mealworms, unseasoned cooked chicken, scrambled eggs, nuts, etc. She'll also love having oatmeal/porridge.

When you do her cage cleaning, remove her wheel just in case. If she has a covered nest, you may consider removing it so you can watch for pups without disturbing her. A covered nest will make it difficult to know if she's had them.

And of course, if she does have pups, do your best to disturb her as little as possible. It might help to stock her up on food to get her through several days at a time. Then once their eyes are open, share some photos because everybody loves baby hamsters.

Strict words needed with your sister. What if this had been an unsuitable pairing and you ended up with eyeless disabled baby hamsters.
There is full information here on caring for the pregnant mother and how to care for the litter.

Good luck.

Update: Yeah, she is definitely pregnant. Her nipples are really pronounced, and she has gotten bigger than she usually is. I've moved her into an aquarium for the birth of the little ones, and am hoping that everything goes smoothly.
