hi, couple of questions if you dont mind
1) how old is the latest a male syrian can be bred, can they breed and successfully produce a litter even if they are 18months-2 years?
2) when is the best time to breed a syrian IE what season, like is it harder in winter and easier in summer or does it not matter?
thanks for any help offered

Males stay fertile for most of their life but you may struggle towards the 2 year gap.
I read somewhere that it is harder in the Winter but other than that females are in season every 4 days.

Quite a bit. If I remember some females may simply stop coming into season.

Re: hi, couple of questions if you dont mind
I have no experience in breeding Syrians at all, but I had robo litters in November last year and January this year, in a warm house it doesn't tend to make a huge difference to be honest. It does seem that breeders that keep their hams in sheds, heated of course but perhaps not quite as warm do tend to have spring to autumn litters. Often the hams are rested all winter, the baby girls I bred the end of this summer won't be breeding till the spring.
As for males, I've had a two year old robo breed, and recently my Lilly's dad who I think is about two and four months had a litter, although that was very much a surprise litter of two tiny ones!

One of my males I didn't breeding until he was over 2.5 years old! He sired many litters before he died a few months later. It really depends on the male. I have more trouble with younger males not being mature enough than older males being unfertile.

Re: hi, couple of questions if you dont mind
From my experiance with syrians it is alot harder for mating from about nov-feb time. Normally i can look anywhere in my hamstery and there will be one girl lifting (when touched of course). around now i can try every day and i have had none. its not really a good idea to have babys around this time of year its just to cold

I've noticed that Luna hasn't come into heat lately (it's hard to miss, she stinks!). I was slightly worried that there might be something wrong, is it possible that it's more likely due to it being winter?

It could be that.
Old age females tend to stop going into heat too.

What age is "old age" in regards to coming on heat? Luna's only a year old but I imagine thats past her breeding age (I have no intention of breeding her btw, just curious).
