Help please!
Hi everyone ,
I'm new here and I was reffered here from another site to get some advice.
I will try and keep the story as simple as I can , I have two chinese dwarf hamsters , a 2 year old female and a 9month old male .... both from p@h.
They obviously live seperately but while I was out of the room my mums friends daughter put my hamsters together (she is only 10 and obviously did not understand about what would happen) I wasn't there so I am not sure what happened and if they mated but I have a few questions and would like some advice please ... I'm really scared because I don't have the first clue about breeding hamsters or raising the pups ..
First of all if she did get pregnant will she be able to actually give birth ok as she is two years old?
Will she still be fertile?
what are the chances of pregnancy if they did mate?
what do I need if she is to have babies?
any help would be greatly appreciated as I am so scared that I m going to lose her or something bad is going to happen , I'm hoping to god she isn't pregnant but I want to be ready for if she is.

Re: Help please!
It is very unlikely she will become pregnant at this age so try and not worry. I think she would be able to give birth and raise pups but I really doubt she will need to in all honesty!
Lets wait and see what happens and have a look here for some info.

Re: Help please!
Hi Sophie, welcome
I too think that it is quite unlikely that they did mate, try not to worry too much . . . easier said than done where out little furbabies are concerned though, I know!
Vetis is a member here, so if you need any specific advice, drop her a PM, I'm sure she would be happy to help.

Re: Help please!
Try not to panic
I would agree that it is unlikely that they did mate, and I would expect her to be much less fertile given her age and the season. If she did become pregnant, although it's not ideal, I don't see why she would have difficulty with the pregnancy. She may lose more condition and weight than a younger female would, but you could help her with changing her diet.
Chinese hamster pregnancy lasts 21 days, and usually they start to look a bit pear shaped around the rear end between 14-21 days if they are pregnant. If it's a small litter, you can't always tell so it's safer to treat her as if she is pregnant - if she's not pregnant then all she'll have had is 3 weeks' of nice treats. Although pregnancy is unlikely, I would give her porridge (a couple of teaspoons full) and a little extra protein such as scrambled/hardboiled egg 2-3 times a week.
Let us know how she gets on. If you have any questions, just ask or PM me

Re: Help please!
thanks everyone , trying not to worry too much , I was mainly scared about her age but hopefully that won't be too much of an issue
I've gave her some scrambled egg , also checked them both thoroughly and if they did fight luckil it cant have been too bad because none of them have any marks on ... thanks for all your advice and help , if she does have babies I will probably pm you vectis for advice , if thats ok

Re: Help please!
Why do you keep them separated? Just curious as I breed Chinese Dwarf Hamsters and they don't need to be separated, they are a pack species and prefer to live in small groups then alone.

I think she keeps them seperated because she is not a breeder and does not want to breed them, and have babies. And obviously since one is a boy and one is a girl and she kept them together she'd probably be dealing with litters of babies

It's very hard to breed Chinese Dwarf Hamsters because the female cycle depends on the temperature of the room and whether or not they have been around normal cycles of daylight.
Also Female Chinese hamsters lose their fertility when they are about a year old.
I agree with separating them since one is a male and one is a female, I was just asking in general because having two or more of one sex is okay. Just wanted to know if she knew they are peaceful with one another when introduced young.
