Default Help for a friend (breeding Campbells)

a friend has a pair of Campbells that mate yesterday.

I have experience in breeding WW, but not Campbells...

I know that the male in Campbells interact in a different way with the female.

I use to separate WW few days before the birth, and I leave the female alone with her babies till they are weaned.

What is the most suitable thing to do with campbells?

Thank you in advance for your kind reply!

Alberto

From what I've read, Campbells fathers are good parents and will help to raise the young with usually no problems. Of course though they'll probably get the female pregnant again straight away so successive litters are likely.

I remember hearing a way round this - separating off a section of the cage with fine mesh so the pair can still see and smell each other (so reintroduction shouldn't be a problem) but can't mate so delaying the next litter.

Babyboos will have proper answers for this though

Default Campbell's breeding

Hi Alberto, I would suggest they do the same as you do with your Winter Whites Russian Dwarf Hamsters and seperate the father - Winter White Russian Dwarf Hamster daddies are actually better fathers than Campbell's Russian Dwarf Hamsters, and will help the mother whelp the pups, cutting umbilical cords with their teeth, cleaning up birth material etc. Going forward from this Winter White Russian Dwarf hamsters will share nest guarding and I have found that fathers often spend more time on the nest keeping the babies warm than the mother. Personally I tend to leave my Winter White Russian Dwarf Hamster fathers in when a litter is born. This subspecies though are better at regulating their popluation, Campbell's Russian Dwarf Hamsters on the other hand will breed till they get really run down and out of condition if we leave them together. Is your friend going to breed again in future (although it may be too late as the female could already be pregnant again), or keep a daughter and son from the litter and pair them with the mum and dad respectively?
