Default Afraid Of Mealworm? Wouldn’t Come Out

Worried I’ve ruined our progress on taming and comfort - help?

We’ve had our Chinese dwarf for three weeks now. Her name is Tula and she is a sweet girl but very shy. This past week she had been making such huge steps in taming. She has not yet eaten from my hand but she has gotten right to the edge and sniffed it while also being out more as I’m near her bin cage. This is a huge step from her being terrified of being out at the same time as us. Taming process has been slow but still progressing.

Over the weekend I bought dried mealworms for her to try. I put a whole one in her habitat, on her seesaw where I usually put treats, because I am still seeing what treats she likes. She has a pretty routine schedule of 10pm-5am for activity but last night the pet cam picked up footage of her coming out around midnight where she sniffed the worm then ran back to her burrow. No other sign of her the entire night. Even on her first nights here she came out to run and explore. I’m so worried I’ve stressed my poor baby after she was finally getting comfortable. I have since broken the dried worm into pieces and moved to her food bowl. I’m worried she’ll never leave now or we’re back to square one…

I haven't ever had a Chinese dwarf but I do have a robo who can be quite skittish. I would not stress yourself out as she is still pretty new at 3 weeks. My robo Star has only just started to be completely comfortable at 4 weeks. Sometimes it could be something else that scared her, that happens frequently to my hamster she seems to some days be afraid of her own shadow... dont worry! You seem to really care for her and I think you will do a great job with her.

As for taming see how she responds to your regular routine in the next few days if you feel she has regressed, while discouraging, give her a few days alone and try again. I had to do this with my hamster and now her taming is progressing faster than before.

Like ccot I haven’t ever had a Chinese hamster, I’ve had robos as well and agree they are skittish. Sometimes hamsters just do weird things we can’t explain, she might just of been startled because it’s new and that’s all part of getting comfortable.

I have a Syrian currently and she’s comfortable with me now, still working on getting her to sit on my hand. She was really weird last night as well, I heard her sprinting in her cage away from her home and she was hiding behind this egg box looking in her home direction smelling.

She was avoiding it like the plague I had to take the cage lid off and show her her home and present to her the bedding in that area before she’d come and look for herself 😂 she’d probably just thought something moved so hid, same with your mealworm.

Just give your hammie time it was probably just shock of something new, and she’ll come out soon and probably be very thankful for it.
