Default accidentally scared new hamster

Hello! I recently got a new Robo hamster and I set up her cage but she seemed to be hiding a lot and burrowing which I know is perfectly normal for hamsters, however, I read that sometimes keeping a low amount of bedding in for the first weeks can help socialize them and familiarize them with you. Tonight I was removing some of the bedding from my hamster's enclosure and I scared her I did not mean to and tried to remove it strategically but i can tell she is scared. What should I do? Would leaving her alone for 3 more days help her readjust and will the taming processes be horrible or impossible now that this has happened? should I add bedding back in when shes asleep tomorrow? I left a good chunk of bedding in the corner she likes to sleep in untouched so will that help her?

Hi and welcome to HC!

I wouldn't worry, she's probably forgotten already.
Have you had a Robo before?

Hi! No i have not so i am nervous I had a syrian but they're so different lol. She's been here since wednesday and I barely see her she rarely comes out if im here or awake, do you think this will go away as she settles in and she'll play around the cage more and when should I start trying to tame her?

A lot depends on your Robos personality. As time goes on Robos do become more confident and spend more time on the surface but it can take a few months. First of all she needs time to settle in and get used to her new environment. I'd leave her be for the first couple of weeks and just talk to her so she can get used to your voice.

Have a look on the Forum. There's a whole section of threads about Robos.

I’m not the best advice as I have not owned many hamsters. But when I was younger I used to have robos and they are lovely and funny.

Now I’m older I’ve got my second Syrian hamster currently, and personally I feel Syrians are more easy to handle and they tend to be slower so I find them easier to cuddle.

Robos have a way of being quicker and I don’t really remember them ever sitting on me, they weren’t afraid of me and would run all over me but they never really stopped. So in my opinion, I think there is a difference if your going from Syrians to robos.

That being said, Ria is absolutely right that all hamsters have different personalities. My first Syrian slept all the time and was very gentle, my second one seems very energetic and, like yourself, she’s still very new and jumpy. So there is nothing saying that your new robo won’t become more confident and like sitting in your hand.

The nervousness could definitely be the fact she is new, and whatever she is like now I’m sure in time she will become more confident than she is now.

Also, don’t beat yourself up about scaring her, accidents happen and I’m a strong believer hamsters can understand our feelings so she probably knows you didn’t mean it.

Just remember she is new, and if you’re used to Syrians I would say robos given their size and quickness, there is a different approach you take towards them so it’s new ground for both of you.

It sounds like you’re doing great though, good luck to the both of you 🐹

Hi! Thank you so much for your help <3 I have accepted that she may not get to a place where she is comfortable to be handled frequently but we shall see I got her mainly as I will be living alone and I wanted a companion and having had hamsters before I figured she would be great! I am wondering if I should have gotten a syrian as I am more used to them, but with her i only really want her not to be afraid of me and to play in her cage a little more rather than staying in the burrows and the hideouts so I can see her

The robos I did have seemed to be pretty confident in their cage as I remember, I don’t know if it makes a difference that mine were males. Mine were also brothers I originally got them to keep in the same cage but they started fighting so had to be separated. I remember one being slightly calmer though and he would let me pick him up. The other one was constantly scatty until he got older.

So hopefully your hammie will gain confidence in time at least in the cage. She’s probably just loving the space and the freedom to burrow.

I did love my robos hand on heart. I personally found their size made it quite funny sometimes as they surprise you how little a gap they can fit through or how sneaky they can be. The reason I have Syrians now is just because they’re bigger and slower I can handle them easier.

As company goes though I still think robos are a good choice once they get confident. And I still believe yours will with time.

I left our new robo for two weeks - they need that time to settle into the cage and start feeling more confident. It's bound to make her jumpy so soon if you do anything in the cage. It's hard waiting but I'd give her a couple of weeks before thinking about any taming.

OMG update: tonight I tried a red light in my room and she is playing right now and didnt run immediatley into her hide when I entered the room!!! I've out some toilet paper in there today with my scent on it and I am going to leave her for the rest of the full week or maybe until friday so she fully settles before attempting to tame her. I am a little scared to make any noise in the room becuase I don't want to scare her as I feel like she is finally starting to warm up, should I be making a normal level of noise or should I wait for a little?

I would continue to carry on as per normal yourself because she's part of the family now and needs to get used to the usual noises and smells.

Ours don't hide when i vacuum the carpet or even around their cages because they know that the noise is not a threat to them.
