Default to hamster, or not to hamster!

hello!!

I had a syrian hamster when I was younger, he was the sweetest thing, he was very very tame and used to wait at the side of his cage for me to come and play with him! He lived for over three years, and when he passed away, I got another syrian hamster who I never managed to tame - he would always bite me and draw blood, so eventually I gave up.
After him, I rescued an elderly, skittish roborivski. And a while after that, I bought a russian hybrid dwarf. They didnt bite, however they didnt particularly enjoy being handled either.
Its been a while now, and I would really like a syrian hamster again, however I don't want one to be like my second! i'm also worried that i would be too scared to try and tame them, as I have become slightly scared of syrian hamster bites, and i dont think its fair to have a pet and not offer them to option of interaction!

As for accommodation, I have a cage which is about 75x50cm - my bedroom has a sort of "nook" area which is the space above my stairs, it measures 110x90cm in floor space, and it is where I would like to put the cage. I am planning on somehow hamster-proofing this entire area so that the hamster could have more space. Would this be enough to prevent any cage aggression?
also, I play piano and the piano is also in my room, would this disturb the hamster sleeping?

sorry if this is the wrong place to post this - but i'd really like to know, what is the likelihood of getting another hamster like my first? Is the accommodation sufficient? and does anyone have any tips for getting over a fear of being bitten!

Thank you!!

Approaching only your question about the piano, I also play piano and don't keep my hamster in the same room for that reason. As to whether your ham would be disturbed, it depends very much on the hamster - and to some extent, your repertoire. My current hamster, Freya, would (I suspect) sleep through an earthquake, but my previous hamster was awakened much more easily. All you can do is try it, and try to have an alternative location for siting the cage if Plan A doesn't work.

You never know, you could end up with a very musical hamster!

Hi and welcome to HC!

For a Syrian hamster you'd need to get a bigger cage because there wouldn't be enough room for a 28cm wheel, a big house and plenty of enrichment like tunnels, hides, a sandbath and corner toilet.
My Syrians live in the Alaska cage and you may be able to fit one of those in the space you have available.

The cage you have may be ok for a dwarf if set up well.

As you know, hamsters have different personalities. We have seven and they range from an attention seeking diva to a complete recluse.

I think it may be a good idea to contact rescues or people who rescue and rehome because they would be able to tell you what a hamster's personality is like. The hamster would have been handled and they would know whether he enjoys human contact or is more of a hamster who prefers his company.

I have no idea regarding the piano playing and can't comment on that.
