Exclamation Free play help

Hi! I have a Syrian hamster, who I want to take out more.
I have a couple problems however- the ground is carpet, if he is in a box he only chews the corners, and I don’t have a bathtub.
I really want to take him out more, without the fear of him escaping.
Any advice or tips would be appreciated

Hamsters love space to around in. Do you have a hall? I put a big pet blanket down, close the doors, put down toys like a spare wheel, tunnels etc that are too big for the cage and a little sand bath my hamsters use if they need a wee.

I have also hamster proofed a room by checking it inch by inch for any holes or cracks in the floor or walls, made sure all electric sockets are turned off and cables out of reach. The room also has a sand bath in a corner.

I have tried the bath tub but they hated it, put up various play pens but they tried to get out after a few minutes of sniffing around or just sat and sulked.

I sit on the floor when a hamster free roams and some like too climb around on me. It's a good and safe environment to interact with a hamster or even to tame a new or timid hamster.

I have endless battles trying to give my syrian happy free roam time. Unfortunately, I don't have a room in my house that I can hamster proof. I use a playpen made from plastic panels from one of those cube storage units joined together in one long line with zip ties. I have a caarpet too but I put cardboad down to protect it as it doesn't matter if she chews the cardboard.

I’ll try that! I used to use a big cardboard box, but it was still too small. How tall is your playpen? My hamster is an expert in climbing!

The panels are 35cm high. They're made from thin plastic on a thick wire frame. Impossible to climb I should think, but easy to push so I put heavy objects like books the other side of the playpen walls so Peggy can't move the pen.

I have the same playpen as Shadow Cat. Two panels should be enough to keep any hamster contained (you might be able to get away with one). The panels can be used as a base but I would recommend covering it with a blanket as sometimes you get small gaps between the panels where a leg might get trapped, and they're also quite slippery.

Towel, blanket, vinyl mat... no matther what I put down as a base, Peggy chews it! That's why I used cardboard. I have to replace it often (luckily with the shops closed I'm getting a lot of packages through the post!) but it's safe for her to chew.
