Angry Don't know what to do with my new hamster ..

Hi everyone,

I got a new hamster last Monday so he's been here a little over a week now. I bought him a savic plaza, huge wheel, 10 inches of bedding etc. I left him alone at first, only going near his cage to feed and change water etc, then tried to speak to him gently etc.

I'm concerned because I have barely seen him at all. I am trying to be patient and know taming can take months with some hammy's and I'm fine with that. But my concern is he literally will not leave his nest if anyone is in the room, even sitting silently and even when staying up into the early hours to wait I can hear he's awake but he won't come out He plays on his wheel, takes food etc overnight.

I am wondering if I have given him too many places to hide and considering slowly removing some of the hides and bedding over the course of a few days to somewhat force him out. If we had made any progress at all I wouldn't feel the need to do this but I am worried he will become used to this set up and we will never ever see him.

Please note also that he came from a breeder who had him completely tame !! On the day I collected him he was sat in her hands for 10 mins no problems, very chill and relaxed so the fact he seems to avoid me at all costs does upset me.

Please help.

Thanks!

Don't worry too much at this point, it's not that he dislikes you but it sounds to me like he's just going through a period of adjustment to not only living independently but also to being in a much larger cage. It's something I've seen happen before both in hamsters I've got from other breeders as well as ones that I've bred myself. Because of this, I tend to put them in a smaller cage to start with whilst they get used to living alone and then upgrade them when they feel settled but if you haven't got a smaller cage then he should still settle in time, it just might take a little longer.

I would try to talk to him whenever you're in the room with him, even if he is hiding because he will get used to the sound of your voice. I have little conversations with mine and they will react very differently towards me than to anyone else's voice. My Chinese Hamsters in particular will often prefer to hide away if they can hear a strange voice and they are normally very confident with me.

Hi, I went through the same thing with Twinkle my syrian male hamster. I thought how on earth am I going to tame him when he shoots back in his house even though I am way across the room not making a sound. Honestly, 1 week is early days for some hamsters.

It took about 6 weeks, but he finally got used to me and his new home and is soooooo tame.

I wouldn't be removing anything now, let him get settled, you can always try switching the lights off at night and go stand outside the door to the room and see if he comes out then, sometimes they do.

Honestly, give it time and I think you will see your hamster and be able to start taming him.

(i am presuming he is a syrian as you have in the savic plaza)

No, you really shouldn't take out your hamster'shides. It's the placehe/she feels safe in and taking out those safe spots would scare him/her even more. I say just give him/her some time. Some hamsters aremore shy/scared than others. When your hamster doesn't feel as shy anymore, he/she will start coming out when you're there.
