Default My hamster won't use his hideout, is this a bad thing?

I got a new hamster, Freddy, the other day, and the cage he had at his old owner's house wasn't the best (to put it nicely). He had no hideout, which I think is the reason why he won't use the one I bought him. He just sleeps in the bedding behind his wheel, like he did in his old cage. I'm just wondering if this is a bad thing, and if I should be encouraging him to sleep in his hideout? Or should I just leave him be? Thank you in advance

Just as a quick note - his hideout is big enough for him, and has some lovely bedding in there as well should he want to use it.

Hi and welcome to HC!

I wouldn't worry. Your hamster may move in his house yet. You could tear up some strips of plain white toilet paper and leave it near his house. It may encourage him to build a nest in there.
It's always so rewarding to give a hamster a better home and life.

I've recently had a foster hamster who been living in a bare cage without a house or hide. She moved into her big house when she came to live with me but after a couple of days built a big cavelike nest under a shelf and slept there.
Didn't worry me, i think she was so used to sleeping out in the open and liked to sleep with her head poking out from her nest.

Alright, thank you. I was just worried because of how cold it is outside, and I heard somewhere that giving them a hideout and extra bedding helps keep them warm. I’ll certainly try putting down some extra bedding near where he usually sleeps, fingers crossed he’ll use it lol.

Is he a Syrian hamster or a dwarf?

I find that Syrians tend to sleep in their houses but the house needs to be big enough like a shoebox house for example and a dwarf tends to sleep burried deep into the substrate.

Either way they need a deep layer of paperbased substrate like Kaytee clean and cozy to keep comfortable and warm.

Woodchips are fine in a playarea or for a baselayer but is no good for building a nest.

They like the additional toilet paper strips for nestbuilding material.
