Question need taming help

We have had our hamster for two months. He is likely 4 months old. Taming has been a very slow process and am starting to lose hope. He was very scared and skittish when we got him but now he will take treats from our hands and let us pet him while he eats them. We have had several bath-tub sessions where we can pick him up for a second about an inch off the floor but then when I went to offer the cup so he could climb in and come out he bared his fangs and hissed. This was after a relatively good taming session where he seemed relaxed! Also the time before this he seemed terrified and wouldn't come out of his cup and chattered his teeth when i tried to lure him out with a treat. The time before that went well. My last hamster was was super friendly and basically tame from day one. Getting disheartened.

Thumbs down Re: need taming help

Hello and welcome to HC!

Some hamsters take longer than others to tame because they all have different personalities and your hamster may just need more time to learn to trust and gain confidence.

I'm just taming my rescue hamster i got six weeks ago as a very scared and nervous baby. I do pretty much the same as you but use a hamster proof room instead of a bath tub.
The first two weeks i left him alone to settle in but talked to him gently and offered him treats through the bars which he took. Then started to stroke him gently while he was busy eating which he tolerated after a few days. Then i took him out of his cage in a bowl and put him on my lap so he got used to me and my scent but kept this sessions very very short to begin with. Then moved on to stroking him while on my lap and leaving my hand on his back and eventually progressed to pick up exercises. Very short sessions to begin with because he wriggled so much when i tried to pick him up but did a few reps when he started to tolerate me. Then i lifted him up to my chest so he could run down my front. I still can't pick him up from his cage because he's a bit territorial but in time i think i'll be able to.

I think its important to make taming fun and more like a game and not to force a hamster into anything. If he's scared then put him back in his cage and try again next day. My hamster loves running around the room where there's a lot of toys on the floor and climbing up a spare cage sitting on the floor so i pick him up every time he gets to the top. He's perfectly fine with getting picked up then probably because he's thinking of climbing back up again.

He may become fully tame in time but i'm not fussed either way, never am because i love all my hamsters just the way they are, one was born tame, two prefer their own company and have no interest in humans, one is tame and one is on his way.
