New Syrian anxieties
Hi, this is my first time using the forum so I really hope this is an ok post.
I got my first hamster on Friday, and I've been really anxious about whether he's ok or not so I suppose this is a bit of a reassurance thing!
He spends most his time digging tunnels around every bit of his bedding (and trying in sand), I know he has a nest area specifically as I can hear him munching on all his food he hides down there from a specific spot daily. I also sometimes spot him on his wheel and I notice he drags his chews about into hideouts and does use them.
I've also tried scattering some safe herbs around so he can forage and making toys with pretty easily accessible treats in them that he just ignores. He even ignores my hand when I put it in the cage for him to investigate. I wonder if he's just uninterested or a bit confused because it's new so he doesn't know what to do with it. Or if he just really likes digging and that's it!!
Sorry if this is a bit scrambled! I just want to check if all this is ok.

Re: New Syrian anxieties
It sounds like you have a totally normal hamster there. They love to dig.
Great to know that your hand isnt scary for him. Look forward to hearing more about him.

Re: New Syrian anxieties
Welcome to HC & congrats on getting your first hamster
They’’re all different but it does sound as though he’s settling in well & enjoying his new home, I’m sure he’ll begin to take more of an interest in you & your hand once he gets more used to all the new things.

Re: New Syrian anxieties
Just wanted to say thankyou for all your reassurance. He let me pet him for a while today and has come over to my hand a bit more. He seems a lot more confident and happy and although I don't really see him use his wheel anymore (I'm sure its a 12 inch one so it is big enough and he can run on it easily, I think he's just not very interested?) He's still very very into digging and is exploring more of what's in his cage! Still isn't interested in treat toys or sniffing out any treats but as soon as I put them in his bowl he's fine. Thanks for the replies : )

Hi mortim3r and welcome to the forum. Everything sounds completely normal to me. He is probably super excited in the freedom he has to dig hamster tunnels and holes. The wheel will get some usage soon I have no doubt about that. Looks like your off to a great start, what's his name?

Sorry hamsteradventures I've only just seen this! His name is actually Mortimer/Mort based off a book but I end up just calling him buddy every time I see him. He has started using his wheel a lot more too : ) He's also interested in my hand now (a couple mistakenforfood bites later) but just because he wants to find treats on it! But he seems well

Re: New Syrian anxieties
I am glad Mortimer is settling in well. One of my hamsters nibbled quite a bit and I soon realised it was always after I had cut up some cucumber or carrot, I think the smell on my hands confused him hence the nibbling. Might also be any soap, hand gel or moisturiser you use. Am sure he will soon realise the difference, fingers crossed? lol
