New hamster doesn’t seem very active
Recently purchased my kids (2) each a Syrian. They were in temp housing together In the shop, but we knew they would need to be separated. We thought they would be fine the first night while I built a second cage (only one hamster was initially planned for). That night they started fighting so I separated and one went into an off the shelf cage just for the night.
That first night, the more aggressive hamster was pretty active on the wheel and such. Once built next day, she moved into the new cage. Granted, she is new to us but doesn’t seem as active. Having said that, upon us waking very morning, her cage looks like a disaster, so I am assuming she is burrowing and perhaps just not interested in the wheels and other items we put in for her? Could she be sad doesn’t have a cage mate to beat up anymore?
As a side note, the less aggressive hamster is still pretty timid and doesn’t want to be held yet but she is living her best life with the run of the cage and seems to love every toy, house, treat etc. we throw her way!
Thoughts?
Thanks!

Re: New hamster doesn’t seem very active
Hello and welcome to the forum.
Firstly, your hamsters will NOT be missing each other. I assume they are syrians and as you have rightly said, they should be kept alone.
It may be that the one that got bullied is a bit withdrawn and nervous, having had the experience of that and a new environment.
Some hamsters adapt to new home quicker than others and they have different temprements...some like wheels, some like digging.. it is all normal.
I'd focus on sorting them both out suitable cages then work on hand taming and letting them settle in to the family

Re: New hamster doesn’t seem very active
It does seem that the more dominant hamster will sometimes take a bit longer to settle than the more submissive one but it sounds as though both as settling in in their own way & having just moved to a new home & had a second change to a new cage it may take a while but I wouldn’t worry, just give them time, they are all so individual you’ll find what each one enjoys over time.

Re: New hamster doesn’t seem very active
Thanks guys! It seems she is just different than hammies I had as a kid! I expanded the bin cage to have a second off the shelf cage With a teeny tiny penthouse thing. She just seems to love burrowing and not
Too concerned with wheels. She is constantly rearranging the bedding and such (carries it all the way to the penthouse) and I can tell food and water is being had each night!
