Red face My hammy is sleeping for 7 hours straight

Also, the title is wrong!!! OMG I meant 17 hours!!!!!!!

Hi guys!

I have a new hamster, his name is Percy and he is 9 weeks old. Lately he has been sleeping for about 17- 18 hours straight (8 AM - 1 AM).

I only see him early in the morning. Wondering if this is normal behavior?
My mom thinks he will become overweight if he sleeps, eats, and doesn't exercise. Do you agree with this? Percy runs a lot on his wheel.

I just want him to be a happy healthy hamster, so any info or suggestions will help! Thanks.

Sounds normal to me, hamsters aren't active during the day mostly, they may wake for a drink or some food but mostly the sleep pattern or number of hours they sleep will be similar to yours.

Hamsters don't sleep all the time when we don't see them. They eat, groom, scratch and move about burrowed into substrate or in their nests in their house. They usually have a hoard within reach and snack from it.

I just lifted the small section of my Syrian's house roof to quietly check on any gone off fresh food thinking he was asleep in his nest in the middle of the day but no, he was awake and poked his head out giving me the "what do you want" look. He then took a piece of food from his hoard and ate it in his nest.

Percy may well come out for a drink when you're not watching and the times you've given from 08.00 to 01.00, 17 hours are normal. Hamsters do change their schedules sometimes and Percy is young and still settling in so will be a bit shy as well.
He won't get overweight and hamsters run quite fast on their wheels.
I think that you have the right idea by listening to your hamsters and letting him find his own routine.

My hamsters keep similar hours to yours with the exeption of one who comes out during the day and i currently have five.

What kind of hamster is Percy?

Hamsters sleep all day and are awake at night. My hamster gets up around 6-6:30 and I'm not sure when she goes to bed but I feel like as long as he is eating, drinking and exercising, don't worry about it to much.
