New hamster sitting in corner
Hello, I got a hamster 4 days ago. He has a very large tank—684 sq in—and plenty of hideouts and chews. Today, he started showing a new behavior. After running on his wheel, he comes to the corner that’s closest to my desk, which I am frequently at, or to the adjacent corner, and sits with his belly and legs pressed to the glass. He just sits there and makes occasional clicking noises. I thought it might be because he’s trying to cool down, but I wasn’t sure.
He also makes clicking noises when he lies down in his wheel after running for a bit, or when he’s exploring his hideouts. I saw online that it can either mean contentment or a respiratory infection. The noises aren’t constant, just occasional. Does anyone know what these behaviors mean?

Re: New hamster sitting in corner
I don't know about the noises but wonder if your hamster wants your attention.
Maybe you could try and finger feed him a treat or take him out of his tank if he wants to come out.
Not all hamsters need taming, some are born sociable and comfortable with humans.
If you think he's trying to cool down you could put a ceramic saucer or mug in the fridge for a while and then put it in his tank. If he's hot then he'll use it.

Re: New hamster sitting in corner
Also, about your hamster making clicking noises, pay close attention to how they sound.
If the chattering your hamster makes are soft, then you probably don't have to worry
If the chattering is is loud and agitated, it probably means that they are stressed or upset.
Overall, if this continues, maybe some more research about hamster behaviors? I can totally relate to what you are experiencing. When I got my first hamster, I was sooooo worried about every single thing they were doing...
So just try not to worry too much about this.

Re: New hamster sitting in corner
Four days isn't very long It takes them about two weeks to fully settle in a cage and develop habits and decide where to nest and make hoards and pee etc - and also to scent mark it. During that two weeks it is best not to clean them out or it sets back taming and really stresses them.
You could just try talking to him through the cage or adding the odd treat. They often don't like a hand in the cage at first though (and can run at it) until they're more settled. Especially a tank if the hand comes from above.
Does he have plenty of substrate and nesting material? (plain white toilet paper torn into strips for nesting material). Some hamsters are more vocal than others but he will be a bit scared if he's just settling in - and testing things out.

Re: New hamster sitting in corner
Thank you for your responses!
Yes he has about 5-6 inches of bedding in one side and 10 inches on the other side. I fed him a couple of times with my fingers and he took them. But he did bite one time, so I did a little more research and figured that I should probably let him adjust for a bit. So I've mostly just been sitting near his cage for an hour at night and reading to him so he gets used to my voice. He does seem a lot calmer now!
But sometimes, he climbs to the highest point in his cage, like on top of his house or platform, and stands up and looks at the lid. I feel like he wants to get out or something, which I found is characteristic of hamsters with too-small cages. I'm wondering if this means I have to get a larger tank, but the one I have right now is already nearly 700 sq inches.
