Default Hamster Wakes up too late to tame

Hi everyone! I've had my dwarf hamster for a week, so I'm gonna start the taming process. But I've noticed so far that she doesn't wake up until very late. Yes, I know they are crepuscular/nocturnal, but I've tried staying up until 1am and she isn't awake. I've tried waking up at 5:30am, but she isn't awake! People say it's bad to wake up your hamster just to tame them, and this makes sense. But I don't really have another choice.
The only time I've seen her since I brought her home was in the middle of the day. She was eating but froze up when I approached her. I tried talking to her but she was just shaking and frozen. This is another reason I don't want to wake her up. She's really scared of me. I would keep talking to her so she can get used to me, but like I said she doesn't wake up!

Hi Sunnyham, how is it going with your dwarf hamster now? Sometimes they just need time to settle into a new home before you start to see them at an earlier time in the evening. Sometimes you don't, it just depends on the hamster.

It's very early days. Just keep talking to her even when you don't see her because hamster are not always asleep when in their houses or burrowed into the substrate. The sound of your voice will become part of the sounds of her new surroundings she's getting used to.
You can also do the tissue trick. Put a tissue up your sleeve or carry it next to your body for a few hours then tear it up and put it in her cage so she gets used to smell.

Thanks to both of you. She still doesn't wake up until very late in the night. I have tried the tissue trick and I have talked to her while she's "asleep." I think she's doing better? I really can't tell because I never find her awake. I don't want to keep waiting to tame her. It's almost been 2 weeks now but she's just never up. Sometimes I wonder if she even gets up at night other than for food and water. Cause I can tell that she hasn't used her wheel, and I wonder if she's used any of her other toys.

What type of wheel have you got, I just wondered if she is managing to move it and it's not too stiff for your hamster if you know she is not using it.

She sounds very nervous. Had you thought of putting a few treats in her cage in / on her toys and in the wheel? Or perhaps scatter feeding her would encourage her to explore the cage more. Sometimes hamsters are tempted out if you turn the lights off in the room she's in. When I brought my current hammy home, the only way I could see her at all was by getting up at odd times in the night (quite easy for insomniac me!) but she does come out more now, although it's still quite late. It's still early days, so bear with it, and please do keep us updated; we'd like to hear how she goes on.

I have an 8-inch comfort wheel. I have noticed that she likes to take the toilet paper I give her and put it on the bottom of the wheel and then pee on it. Maybe she isn't using her wheel cause she prefers it as a toilet?

I haven't thought of that! Next time I feed her I will try. And I will try waking up in the middle of the night, too. Yesterday, I noticed she came out for 5 minutes during the day for some food. I tried talking to her, but she ran away. I will continue trying to tame her during the day.
