Scratching?
We have a two part home for our hammy connected by tubes, the smaller side doesn't have as much bedding so it gets a full clean every month. Now it is time for the big side to get a full cleanout and I was going to clean just that side today following the advice on the site: leaving some bedding that was "clean" and only change bedding and wiped out the bottom this week then wash the toys and hides next week and the wheel the following week. Unless I find a surprise when I look in I was going to attempt to leave his nest & hoard alone.
So that was my plan, however I've noticed he is scratching more than what I would call "his" usual. He looks fine, no missing fur, ears and nose are pink, eyes are bright and acts normally except for the scratching. Sometimes it is the obvious grooming where hands or feet are going around and in the mouth and back around again. But other times it is like a dog with a flea, he doesn't keep going to the same spot as I would expect if he had an irritated patch of skin.
What is your advice? Do I stick with plan A and do the "less stress" cleaning regime and keep watch or do I go full monty and make sure he isn't being pestered by some kind of mites or bugs?
I don't see anything but of course, you usually don't. I attempted to put some larger pieces of toilet tissue in to see if that would highlight any uninvited guests, but he quickly took those into one of his sleeping spots. Other than that the only item we've added recently is a mug to help him keep cool.

Re: Scratching?
Scratching could be a sign of mites. An occasional scratch is ok, as humans have an itch sometimes as well. It also may look like scratching while they groom. I had a Syrian a few years ago that did that quite a bit. But mites are external parasites that make hamsters itch. Some symptoms are extreme scratching, and patches of fur loss. I would consult a vet, just in case. Hope this helped.
